Next Captain

Ruben Dias changed the entire aura of this team when he came back. That's your answer.

Agree, but he did it without being captain, so it's not necessary.

Look at the players we've had as captain recently - Kompany, Silva, Fernandinho, Gundogan. I maybe wouldn't have put Silva or Gundo down as typical captains beforehand, but they led well and always showed up.

They've all been senior players when appointed, it seems to be the way we do it and it works with the rest of the players. It feels to me like it would be wrong for Kev not to be added to that list of captains.

Dias will get his turn and may become the best captain we've had, but for me, he's got to wait his turn still first. Two years for Kev, then Dias for maybe 6 or 7 years after that.

How do we define senior? Vinnie was 25 and quite fresh-faced when he first wore the armband… he did wear it for nine years.

All after VK would be ‘elder statesmen’ types. Direct result of the player vote? Conscious or unconscious bias

Agree that it seems to be elder statesman types, and yes, probably because of the player vote and the respect they have for the senior players in the squad. Which is pretty much why it would feel wrong to me if Kev just got bypassed at this stage in his career. Feels like it would be a bit of a kick in the teeth for him.

Forgot Vinnie was that young when he became captain tbh. It was when we were still becoming established at the top, and the squad wasn't as harmonious. He was definitely the right choice back then.

Our ‘elder statesmen’ that season would’ve been Gareth Barry, then 31, Kolo Touré, also 31 and having already been skipper, and Yaya and Joleon both 29 at the time.

Kolo had the diet-pill charge hanging over him, so was never getting back the armband. Yaya was… Yaya, in full Yaya mode. So that ruled out both Tourés.

So, following the pattern that year, we could’ve realistically gone for Lescott or Barry. Don’t think either would’ve been terrible, but how great a fortune that we were blessed with Vinny’s leadership for nine years.

Dias can be a Vinny.

He certainly can be, but that was all pre-Pep and how everything works has changed. I am 99% sure it will be Kev and all the players will be happy with that, because of how it's been done under Pep before. Dias will be incredible when he gets his turn, but he's an incredible leader anyway, the armband won't change any of that.

Dont think Lescott quite carried the respect required. Very good player for us, but not quite the same level as some of the others. Barry would have been a good shout, he was a captain at other clubs throughout his career.

Dias

Agree absolutely - it has to be Dias - he exudes authority and will lead whether he is captain or not. Off field he is exemplary. He would be my choice every time.

Dias is a leader regardless.

You and everyone else is right about that and also that maybe he would be the 'best' captain.

But, under Pep it's always been one of the elder members of the squad.

Personally I think that if that was to change now, and sidestep Kev, he'd be really fucked off about it. I'm pretty sure he'll feel 'next in line' under the criteria previously used.

Dias does exude authority, but he could continue to do so without the armband and without us pissing off one of our best ever players by ignoring him for the role.
