I believe Kansas City was established before the state of Kansas. Both named after the River.

But the city was part of Missouri before Kansas as a state existed, hence why its not in the state Kansas.

I got to watch the Patriots 2019 play-offs semi-final v Kansas City in a sports bar when I was over in Ohio. It's definitely an 'experience' watching it on US TV.
