Re: NFL Draft & Menelik Watson (City Related)

Another couple of questions if someone can answer .
I understand the draft pick on how it works not the fine details though.

If a club wanted a certain player would the club have already negotiated a contract with him beforehand.

Would a player be able ask clubs he'd prefer they wouldn't draft him because another team who had later pick would pick him and he'd rather go to them. Or is it a case of the team is going to pick you so the player gets the best deal he can, the negotiations behind the scenes with agents must be mind blowing.

First question; only the team with the number one overall pick can negotiate with the player they are selecting before the draft, Jake Long back in 2008 being an example. I think, not sure though, that if that happens then possibly the team with the second pick could then go after who they want. Educated guess at best.

Second question; players can refuse to sign for the team that drafts them but he'd have to sit out the season and re-enter the draft the next year. More than likely his stock would fall drastically though. In 2004, the Chargers were going to pick Eli Manning but he came out and said he didn't want to play for them. They drafted him anyway and then immediately traded him to the Giants who selected a player San Diego wanted (Rivers) and also received additional picks.

I think Michael Crabtree waited until almost half the season was over until he finally signed his rookie contract, that's the nearest thing I've encountered a player sitting out the year and possibly re-entering the draft.

Watson just went to the Oakland Raiders, drafted at pick number 42.

The Raiders aren't brilliant, put it that way. Haha! They'll probably end up with a very high draft pick next year, maybe even number 1.

Pretty hardcore fanbase though from what I've seen, I think most people from LA still support them from when they were based there.

Raiders have been getting steadily better since Al Davis is out of the picture, they have a good young roster.

They have been shit for years, but with the NFL, franchises can turn round quickly.

Their fans are among the worst in the States. Think Millwall....

2010: 8-8
2011: 8-8 (Davis dies in October of that season
2012: 4-12

They have 1 decent receiver, a good running back in McFadden and yet another different QB under centre. Along with the departure of McClain.

They'll be picking top 10, and I'm being generous, next season. I'll bet on it.
