Nick Powell to the Rags

In 2 years time his profile will read that he was plucked from the playing fields of Manchester, a United fan from birth, a product of the United youth academy since he was 6 years old.

Isn't he still young enough to qualify as Home Grown in three years time? In which case he definitely will be one of the rags' 'local lads'. He comes across as a massive twat already so in fairness he probably is a life long United fan.

Obviously the draw to these big clubs is big for youngsters but why move so early?
Continue your development with your club and then when you're 20, 21 move to whichever big clubs are interested and in the process get the club that have brought you through a £4m or £5m transfer fee rather than the relatively small £1m you might pay for an 18 year old.

How much did we pay for Henshall and at what age?

he was 16 and about £200k plus sell on clause i think!

Exactly, he could have stayed at Swindon, developed even more with first team football and get his side a big transfer fee

Manchester United have completed the signing of the 'exceptional' midfielder Nick Powell from Crewe Alexandra for an undisclosed fee.

Sir Alex Ferguson is relishing the prospect of working with the 18-year-old, who has signed a four-year contract after passing a medical, after an in-depth scouting process.

And the United boss thinks Powell, a spectacular goalscorer as Crewe defeated Cheltenham in the 2012 League Two play-off final in May, has a bright future.

Ferguson told United's official website: "We have scouted Nick for months now. He is an exceptional talent and has been schooled well at Crewe.

"The thought of making the step up to the Premier League next season is an exciting prospect. I can't wait to get started"
Nick Powell Quotes of the week

"I'm delighted he has chosen to come to United. He has a lot to offer and we are all looking forward to working with him."

Development

Powell, a product of Crewe's famous Academy, was linked with almost every Premier League club after scoring 16 goals in 45 appearances in all competitions in 2011/12.

But his ambition was to play for United, as he said: "It really is a dream come true to be signing for Manchester United.

"I have had a great time at Crewe and I would like to thank them for helping me to develop as a player over the past 13 years.

"I'm excited about continuing my development with Sir Alex and the world-class players in the squad.

"The thought of making the step up to the Premier League next season is an exciting prospect. I can't wait to get started."<br /><br />-- 12 Jun 2012 18:19 --<br /><br />By all accounts the cnuts deserve each other......
