Kovacic bring nothing like the attacking threat that Barella does.

Barella is not a defensive mid, nor even a holding mid.

I think he'd be the best option right now. If it's true that Bernardo has a £47m release clause in his new contract then Barella should be a priority as he is the best like for like replacement for Bernardo in my opinion. Then we can go all in for Florian Wirtz next summer.

If the club truly wanted Paqueta, a kind of all round midfielder who can play deep and higher up, then Barella is the most obvious replacement.

Eze is a pure attacker, whom I don’t hate and rate a bit, but Barella is world class.

Barella can play in the double pivot OR the attacking mid spots as a controller, just like Paqueta and Bernie.

I would prioritize a player like this over the impossible Wirtz.
