Nicolas Otamendi - 2016/17 performances

Problem is that his head seems to go when he decides he's being fouled and he starts playing for the ref. Trying to get whistles and feigning injuries and doing all sorts of things that a CB really can't be doing. When he just goes about his business no nonsense he's quite a good player but when he gets frantic and starts trying to do too much he creates such havoc in his own back line that it becomes a huge problem. The best way I can describe it would be to use the gambling analogy that he goes "on tilt" in the middle of a match and there's just no bringing him back. He is awfully comfortable carrying the ball forward and can play a forward pass. He's not strong in the air (lost the duel with Zlatan which could have been called a foul but who knows what is and isn't a foul on those any more). But losing aerial duels to tall players will always happen, he's got to stay composed and within himself and stay disciplined and he'd be just fine.

Best defender last season and comfortably our best so far this
Shhhhhhh! The boo boys always come out every bad game and raise their hands up and point to it as proof they were always right. But ignore the 85℅ of the time when he is good to great.

They called it right on Sky. Alongside VK telling him what to do and when to do it, Ota looked OK. Alongside Kolarov in the 2nd half he was useless. He is just so predictable and makes it so easy for a on attacker to wait until Ota is on his arse.

Get rid
So the 12 games without Vinny of which he'd been one of the better players, how exactly did he pull those off without Vinny telling him?

Best defender this season and last. Keep fooling yourselves.

Who for?

Get a f*cking grip guys, he certainly does not deserve the shite some on here pile on him, he`s been our best defender by a long f*cking way more than a few times this season, an he drives forward with the ball in possession rather than belt long balls or sideways an back, try watching the match again an see just how often he was involved in their half as well as covering the f*ck up we had playing left back.
Spot on mate.

Problem with him is that he can be very good for 89 minutes but one of his 50 tackles per game will be wrongly timed and leave opponent striker in big chance for goal. He is tackle junkie.

Stop fucking rolling around on the floor you cheating bastard. I'd gladly get rid of him just for that. He's fucking embarrassing at times.

He is the biggest worry for me. We need a new centre half asap. I'd even seriously consider putting Tosin in until we get one lined up.

Really don't understand why he is so erratic. Is it because our midfield is not performing their defensive responsibilities? Whatever is his idea about little adventures should be dropped or rectified. We get opened far too easily sometimes and he is amidst of it more often than not.

What bugs me most about Otamendi and maybe it's really Pep but he comes into midfield and isn't a great passer. He'd be better off giving the ball to the midfielders and getting out of their way.

Last night he was taking the ball from Garcia and then slowing down our forward motion.

IMO this is all part of Pep's challenge. Our defenders are not good enough to be midfielders - especially Otamendi.

He has not got composure without the ball. Simple as. Far too rash. Commits himself to a tackle too much too often when it's better to stay on feet. Thought he was phasing this out of his game this season and had a few really good games but the old otamendi is well and truly back now.

He's our best CB when it comes to passing it forward though

For example he's created 4 chances from passing it out from the back...Stones/Kompany/Kolarov - 0

he's even worse than Barbara Streisand at Chelsea for the Playstation defending. He charges out of his defensive line on a whim, dives on his arse and is then in a position where no defender wants to be, running back towards goal. He must be a fucking nightmare to partner. He wins some visually pleasing challenges. That's about it. If he was a good defender he wouldn't need to slide in on his arse as his go to defensive weapon.

We will never look like a solid back 4 with this guy in it. He is too erratic.

This is what annoyed me about Ota last night, the number of times he gave the ball away when he went forward. Defensively he made some good interceptions but then countered that by going to ground so often, a really frustrating player.

I disagree when his passing been questioned. I actually think it's decent. My issue with him is him constantly diving in, getting dragged out of position and spending more time on his arse than his feet. Needs replacing. It doesn't matter how much we spend on centre halves, we seem to always need another one.

This all day. Fernandinho does the same thing in midfield fwiw (although tbf he stays on his feet) but it gets overlooked because he wins visually pleasing tackles or makes interceptions. We would be better if we just calmed down a bit.

What bugs me about him is his whole tough guy image, he Gets tackled rolls on the floor like he's hurting then jumps up instantly giving it the big one.
TOUGH MEN DONT ROLL AROUND ON THE FLOOR FELLA
