I thought it was easy to spot that the defenders looked shit cos of the midfield.

I did too. Still don't understand why supporters criticize their own players instead of getting behind them.

Many wanted Otamendi sold and labeled him a flop, just like they did with Sterling last season.

This season after one game Claudio Bravo is the flop and is horrible. haha Bravo will prove himself and most posters slating him will be in hiding. Thought he had a good game btw given the circumstances.

Sky, as they do, just talking about Ross Barkley, showed him scoring v City.

He picked the ball up in midfield, Otamendi came out & sat on his arse & Barkley jogged away from him at leisure & smashed it in.

Pure unadultarated fucking shite. You can't actually defend worse even if someone bribes you. But Pep has told him he can't do it anymore. If he does he'll go.

The reason people such as myself are complimenting him on his magnificent performance on Saturday & giving him motm, was because he was magnificent & the reason for often saying he was complete fucking shite last season is because he was often, complete fucking shite.

He was not often complete fuckin shite. That's a massive exaggeration. He was our best CB last year when it's all said and done with Kompany going in and out of lineup. He made mistakes but so did Bonucci and Boateng. When defenders and keepers make mistakes it got put on spotlight cause usually we concede goals as a result. But forwards make mistakes too. Aguero missed sitters after sitters during a tough patch last season before scoring 5 against Newcastle. He also didn't score in the CL much. Does that make him complete fuckin shite? Of course not.

Rewatching the game again, just wow. Was there a better CB performance from any of our players since the takeover (so not counting Dunne :)? I know Vinnie scored THAT goal in our crucial derby, but that was a complete masterclass. Basically all of his forward risky passes were briliant attacking moves, and everytime he attacked the space in United's half, he created havoc.

Ha I saw that. I think it will be funny/horrifying in future years looking back at Otamendi's first season at City, in comparison to what's to come

I think it is impossible to overestimate quite how bad Pellegrini was for most, if not all of our defensive players. In the 14/15 season he even managed to make Vinnie look an absolute chump most of the time so it's not surprising that last year, Otamendi coming into a new league and playing under him looked really poor at times. I feel a bit sorry for Mangala, comes in, plays under that berk for two years and then as soon as someone comes in who has a clue, he's gone.

He was complete shite but so were most of the players around him. Our midfield was complete dross and that's because Pellegrini completely stopped coaching the players tactically. Otamendi was highly regarded in Spain and he was put in a system that was supposed to press the ball but actually ended up playing a system that involved half arsed pressing for a little 5/10minute spell and then sitting off and allowing the opposition to run straight through our midfield. Otamendi then would come flying out and end up on his arse or just missing the ball and leaving a nice big gap behind him. It's crucial for our defenders to know when to try and win the ball and when to just stand the man up and pressure him. If you commit to getting the ball, you have to get it.

No because I didn't say Otamendi is complete fucking shite I said he 'often' was, last season. Which is true. And people trying to rewrite it, as if folks were wrong to mention it, are taking the piss.

Otamendi has played more genuine top quality games for City this season already, than he did in the whole of last season.

He was being arse kissed by fanboys for often routine defending, but also letting players run off him at set pieces for free headers, chucking himself over trying to win free kicks instead of doing his job, rushing out of position leaving gaps behind him for oppo to run into, being bitched in the air by journeyman cfs, outpaced, outhought, & sitiing on his arse when he should be holding players up. The shiteness at times of our other top players like Aguero, Yaya or Silva didn't harm him, it helped him stay under the radar.

He was lauded for any decent games he played, & praised heavily for average ones whilst his constant stream of mistakes were put down to Pellegrini telling him to do stuff or Fernandinho or Yaya not doing his job for him. He was all over the place.

He isn't allowed to be, anymore. If he goes back to that level, he's out the door. So far, he's looked like a real top cb apart from 20 mins v West Ham, where he reverted to last season. On Saturday, he was heroic. Hopefully that will be his futute standard & then he will become one of the best around. His standard last season, was Johnny Evans with a beard.
