Nicolas Otamendi - 2017/18 performances

The defensive record is more down to how the team defend together which has completely gone out of the window this last couple of games. Defenders making just as many mistakes. To be honest though both our goals came from rag errors that our lot would have been castigated for. The game had 5 goals and all 5 were poor defending.

The last 2 games otamendi and Kompany have been awful and both have contributed to us conceding. no leadership, poor passing and bad positioning, if either laporte or stones would have done that there would be a lot more criticism imo. yes stones has made mistakes and yes laporte hasn't really played either, but imo they will be out future pairing and the only way they will get over mistakes is if they play and get a consistent run. the midfield also offered barely any protection yesterday.

but as i said the style and type of football we play our defenders will make mistakes.

No problem with your suggestion but let’s get over the line first. One back first then the other. We need to get this league wrapped up and then start preparing for next season. These two as CB’s is fine but not both yet.

fair enough mate. the centrebacks that played yesterday arent doing such a great job. when you think about it we've got 2 50m centre backs not playing, walker rested and Mendy out all season. we will be a different team with all of those back.

Not been at his best when it’s mattered in the last two games, I would bench him and Vinny against the dippers, play Laporte and Stones. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

I usually have a few pints before matches but I’m so glad I refrained from drinking and also refrained from logging on here. Along with Dax I’d consider myself a pretty fierce defender of Otamemdi but there’s no denying that he’s been poor the last 180 minutes. I’d say drop him but you can’t do that going into Liverpool down three with an aggressive high risk / reward strategy needed. (Feel free to correct me here).

I try not to look at players in terms of indivudual match performances but little things they do carried out over the course of a season and the total value they add over the 2000 plus minutes they play. Sure it’s easy to notice the blunders but in totality his value will be proven when he makes the ToTS.

I guess there’s two ways to look at this. Safe/low volatility/consistent which minimizes the obvious clear blunders or aggressive/mid-high volatility/potentially dominant. He’s going to look like shit a few matches throughout the year but frankly every single player does. I’d much rather have a player that can dominate when he’s on form then one who always gives you a 7/10.

Why freak out now? He’s had a shit patch of form it happens. Again he will be in the ToTS so I think Pep and Nico know what they’re doing.

I will be astonished if he plays against Liverpool.

Well out of form.
I'll bet you a 100 he does. The emotions and preconceived notions of fans really play no role in these decisions. And for that I'm quite grateful. It's why 2 managers have continued to play him in spite of fans going on whine every minor opportunity they get. And those opportunities are few and far between. This whole thread is evidence of that fact.

Yesterday was bad. Liverpool was average. Compared to the other 35 games this season, most of which ranged from decent to great, it's at best assinine these opinions that our best defender should be dropped.

No one suggested Silva or Kev be dropped for being terrible at Pool, or Fernandihno for being just as poor in the very same 2 games that are now the basis for why Otamendi isnt good enough.

The irrationality here is puzzling.

It’s because we have £100m of centre halves on the bench who have shown they can be very good players so dropping a centre half is easy. We don’t have the replacements to drop Fernandinho, Silva or de Bruyne so we can’t ask them to be dropped

Perhaps! But I doubt that's the case. The claims aren't just that he should be dropped (fair enough a few posters suggested that) but the general Crux is that "he is not good enough"

A different proposition entirely. I personally think he and Larporte gives us the current best passing out of the back.

Not related to Otamendi alone but the basic defensive mistakes for their last 2 goals had nothing to do with playing out from the back, under any tactical system I'd expect defenders at this level not to make schoolboy errors in defending straightforward crosses into our box, or at the very least not to make the identical mistake twice within 15 minutes .
