You’d ask a neighbour who they voted for, and that’s the end of the conversation?Do your neighbours ask you why you vote / voted a particular way?
You all work for polling companies?

I’d say both my neighbours vote Tory. Three voters in total. You’d ask a neighbour who they voted for, and that’s the end of the conversation?

"Overspill". Fuck me. I grew up in Failsworth and Oldham in the 80s. My junior school was 30% Asian kid then, and when I left Kaskenmoor Comp in 1990 it was closer to 40% then. Decades ago.Yep. I quite regularly ask people who they vote for, don't know why that's seen as weird!!
Anyway, as best as I recall there were 4 main reasons given.
1) They like Nigel Farage and his policies.
2) They do not like Tories/Labour so that only left Reform. i.e not a vote for Reform but a vote against the other parties.
3) New Moston is fairly close to Oldham/Rochdale which both have large Asian populations. The overspill is starting to move into New Moston and some people do not like it and want to upsticks themselves. So 3 couples on our street have moved already for that very reason (they said). As an aside my sister in law used to work on the housing section in Salford and she is adamant that all races when applying for a house stated a preference for living close to their 'own' so I'm not sure that the behaviour of my neighbours could be called racism.
4) Money. The thinking is that the influx of Asians onto the street will affect house prices negatively (I've no idea whether that is so). So voting Reform and curbing immigration keeps money in their pocket and their house price high.
That is exactly the point I'm making. I find everyone very, very similar. Moving when you do not like your neighbours is pretty much standard behaviour. You would move because you did not like your neighbours politics, pretty insignificant to most, but important enough for you. We are all different.Think I’d want to move myself if they were my neighbours to be fair
We used to live on Queens Road, Cheetham and one of our local schools was The Temple which even in the 80's was 90% Asian. Moving to New Moston is a lot more balanced! The people who leave these high immigrant areas always get called racist but the people doing the calling never seem to move into the vacated properties. I would love to know why?"Overspill". Apart from being a Tarquin. Marina is spot on.Nice article but is she right about increased numbers of people saying "I don't like him but I agree with him on this"?

4 makes little sense. When the first non-white family bought a house on our road of M20 semis in the early 60s it was because they offered to meet the asking price. Some suggested the sellers should have accepted a lower price to keep the street white.Yep. I quite regularly ask people who they vote for, don't know why that's seen as weird!!

I'm going to be honest the only thing I know about Reforms policies are that they are hugely anti immigration. Now call me stupid but I do not think that being pro or anti immigration makes you a good or bad person. I find that idea just silly.Point 1 feels quite frightening to me..........
Definitely numb at the very least.Yep. I quite regularly ask people who they vote for, don't know why that's seen as weird!!

Yep. A difficult one to prove one way or the other complicated by the fact that most immigrant families are poor and therefore buy houses in the poorest areas. Quite naturally, the immigrants feel more comfortable with their 'own' and more move into the same area, leading to (quite naturally?) white flight. That's happened in Cheetham where we used to live (not many Daily Mail readers move to Cheetham anymore but also not many Guardian readers either).4 makes little sense. When the first non-white family bought a house on our road of M20 semis in the early 60s it was because they offered to meet the asking price. Some suggested the sellers should have accepted a lower price to keep the street white.
But that was the 60s. The MEN somehow made a story out of an English family calling their son Karl rather than Carl. Too German...
See my answer above. Why is the exact same house a different price in different parts of Manchester? I would suspect that the exact same house in a white middle class part of Manchester is a lot higher price than the exact same house in say Cheetham. So why don't the white middle class move to Cheetham and save themselves 60% of the purchase price?Definitely numb at the very least.
Why would they presume house values will fall and why do they want to move?
Maybe she could have challenged him over a late night curry?Nice article but is she right about increased numbers of people saying "I don't like him but I agree with him on this"?

So bullying Jewish kids and singing Nazi songs is a "skeleton in the closet"?Seriously? There used to be a phrase "never kissed a Tory" and now we seem to have one "never kissed a Reform voter". Personally I try to take people as I find them. I do not expect perfection from anyone (we all have skeletons in our closet?) I've been in houses and parties of Labour, Tory, Reform and probably all things in between voters. They all seem exactly the same to me. Love their kids, maybe love their spouse, love their animals, are reasonably considerate to other people, passionate about their team. Without asking them outright who they voted for you would not guess. I've tried many times, talked to someone for a few hours (I'm actually very affable), tried to guess their politics and got it wrong when I've asked the question. On our street we have one Tory (that I know about), he does all the collections for funeral bouquets, Christmas homeless etc (he volunteers to help the homeless one night a week). He put a vote Tory pamphlet in his window for some election or other and some good hearted person judged him and put his window in.
I was more interested in why your neighbours presume Asian families will lower house prices or why it would be 'bad' if they move in.See my answer above. Why is the exact same house a different price in different parts of Manchester? I would suspect that the exact same house in a white middle class part of Manchester is a lot higher price than the exact same house in say Cheetham. Ask the Reform voters about their denial of global warming and how Reform is funded by companies heavily reliant on fossil fuels. Do they agree with Reform's policy of using MORE fossil fuel and coping with the problems in the future?I'm going to be honest the only thing I know about Reforms policies are that they are hugely anti immigration. Now call me stupid but I do not think that being pro or anti immigration makes you a good or bad person. I find that idea just silly.
My objection on here was to the thread drifting into an "all Reform voters are cunts" hate fest. I've never once heard my Reform voting neighbours say "all immigrants are cunts" not once, not even close to it, even in private one to one conversations.
Ask them also can they afford private medical insuranceAsk the Reform voters about their denial of global warming and how Reform is funded by companies heavily reliant on fossil fuels. Do they agree with Reform's policy of using MORE fossil fuel and coping with the problems in the future?
