No More Champions League For Me

I would much rather win the league, get through the groups and go out in the knockout stage

Someone made a point last night which really topped it off for me, that we would arguably be better off finishing 3rd in the group and winning the Europa league to increase our co-efficient points, than getting out the group and getting knocked out in the knockout phase

That's how ridiculous the seeding of this competition is

Me too. Prioritise the league above all else imho, and let the CL take care of itself. We may do well, we may not. I cannot remotely imagine us winning it, and I'd be pretty gob-smacked if we made the final. So ruling those two scenarios out, I'd rather we just concentrated on the league. I'd be monumentally pissed off if we have another season like 12/13 and won nothing because we devoted all our attention to the CL.

It's weird it just doesn't give the buzz that premier league does. Probably if we get to the semi/final that buzz would be there at the moment I'd have winning the premier league as my priority every day of the week..

What kind of prices can we expect CL games to be at for home games? As prices for home games in the prem are putting alot of people off, do the club lower prices for CL to pull in extra people? Seems a lot on here will be giving them a miss this year, so maybe pushes the club to offer some lower prices to fill the ground up. Or is that just wishful thinking on my part.

£50 minimum I'd expect

the lack of atmosphere
Atmosphere is why I go to live football. If I just wanted to watch football, I'd watch it on the telly rather than pay £750 a year for a shite view in 110.

You pay 750 quid a year for atmosphere. You could just as well save the money and meet your mates before and after the match if the football doesn't matter.

I see we've now got literally no chance of winning the tournament or even making it to the final.

Better pack up and go home then. Just like after Liverpool beat us at Klanfield we should've just given them the title.

Christ the level of negativity grows exponentially as we become more successful. That's staggering.

I can see we're coming at football fandom from a completely different perspective.

Not a great competition at all.

  • Because of the way UEFA structures the competition you get dull repeats constantly. We've had Bayern three times and CSKA twice. Arsenal keep getting Dortmund. Variety is the spice of life, not in UEFA's competition it isn't.
  • Games are often dull stop-start affairs because of European refereeing which doesn't allow long passages of play where teams can start to get disorganised and errors be exposed by decent football.
  • Atmosphere is usually shite. Plenty of regulars don't go. When I look around me at Champions League matches about half the usual faces are missing. Considering I'm in 110 - the best place in the ground for atmosphere, so many regular singers missing doesn't bode well. I'd imagine due to high ticket prices. The away fans, facing expensive trips and supporting expensive elite clubs domestically, are usually very quiet as well. No-one in the Champions League has come anywhere near Poznan or Aris for their support.
  • Fans not allowed too near the pitch in case they get in the way of advertising - which is, of course, what football is really all about. For UEFA competitions the first two rows are closed.
  • Competition sponsored by major breweries, beer not sold separately, in fact not sold at all, because football fans can't be trusted with beer...

The competition is the living embodiment of everything that is wrong with modern football.

Great post. Been to many Euro away trips and the Europa is better for fans. Amazing atmosphere in Poznan, Salonika, Porto, Schalke but plastic at Barca and Bayern. The CL is overhyped.

It is for me. As I said above, I'd FAR rather we won the league again, even if it meant not getting out of the group stage.

Let me ask people this, which would you prefer this year?

A) Finishing 2nd in the league behind Chelsea, and making the CL Semi's?

or

B) Winning the league again, but not getting out of the CL group?

I'd take B every single time. And in fact, if we prioritise the league, we'd probably still get out of the group but likely we wouldn't top it and perhaps we'd go out next round like we did last year. That would do me easy, if we win the league again.

think id rather keep winning the league too. the CL matches just seemed to be a bit of a let down in the end, maybe because of watching sky hype it up for years as being the best competition in the world, finally watching city compete didnt quite live up to the expectation? sure sky will start to lose interest too when it moves to BT Sport.

i really enjoyed the UEFA/Europa league games, seemed to be a more about the football than the sponsors.

i think the competition is important for the clubs development though, for attracting players/sponsors etc but for me, i think i prefer the league and domestic cups.
