Non City games at Maine Road

Northwich Vics played 2 (I think) FA Cup 'home' games at Maine Road, against Everton and Oldham and Altrincham played Spurs all in the 70's.
Other semi finals was Everton v Liverpool, Liverpool v Rags and Rags v Oldham.

Someone mentioned the Bill Taylor testimonial v England, early 80's - I went to that, think it was England U23's though
Vics played Oldham there in 1977 in the 4rh round of the cup. 26k attendance?
I saw Warrington Town beat Winsford in 89 in a final.
Also Wigan played a Rugby Union team in 96 is a dual code game

I know Altrincham legend Jeff Johnson, he's a blue but reckons that they got more v Spurs at Maine Road than we got the week before against Leicester. Jeff has great stories of Altys exploits in the league and FA cup in the 70's/80's

Att c 53000. Steve Highway played for Skelmersdale, big crowds in the Amateur cup in those days.
Yes I was at that game too, as a youngster at the time I had no idea that Skem was a Scouse overspill town, I wondered why there were so many mickeys around.

We didn't play Leicester the week before, we played Rotherham on the night before (Monday) in a rearranged 3rd round tie that finished 0-0. I went to both games and yes Alty may have got a few more in attendance but Spurs brought a lot more support than Rotherham as I recall. On the Wednesday night it was over to Rotherham for the replay which we won 4-2, 3 FA cup ties in 3 nights, there must be quite a few other Blues on here who did the same.

Ha ha, I lived in Sale at the time and watched a few of Alty's FA Cup giant-killings, they had a very good side, only kept out of the league by the old pals act of re-election. A shame that when automatic promotion/relegation came in their fortunes had declined.

The round before they played Spurs they won 2-0 at Droylsden and Jeff scored, he lived a couple of hundred yards from Droylsdens ground. Droylsden had knocked out Rochdale at Spotland in the 1st round, I went to that game.

They used to play the Northern Premier League cup final at Maine Road saw Macc Town play Burton Albion on two occasions winning one each, I am sure the Manchester Premier Cup final was played there as well.
