Non City games at Maine Road

Certain it was very late 1970`s when England V Italy (under 21`s European Championship Qualifier) game on a Wednesday night.Barnes and Owen played in that game and Owen was brilliant that night.Barnsey had some good runs but the poor sod was nearly crippled with some awful tackles on him.
I remember this game as my niece got married that day and I left the wedding reception and went to the game and got back for the evening bash with an hour to spare for a few more sherbets.Seem to remember us winning comfortable.

Would have been U23's then Oakie - did Corrigan play as an over aged player?

Ah yes it would have been mate. Not sure about Joe C. playing but you may be correct.I`ve had a few fooking sleeps since the 1970`s but plenty of senior moments. ;)
Just done a bit of research and it was the U21's.... it changed in 1976....

I remember we were a popular Rugby League challenge cup finals venue.

It seemed weird watching Wigan and Saints on our pitch.

IIRC, that crowd of 22,241 for the Italy under-21 game was a record at the time for the England under-23s/under21s and it was beaten by 22,243 against Yugoslavia in the semi: http://www.11v11.com/matches/england-v-yugoslavia-02-may-1978-257059/

But then we drew only 8,112 against Scotland in 1982 despite Reid and Caton, plus ex-Blue MacKenzie, being in the line-up: http://www.11v11.com/matches/england-v-scotland-28-april-1982-257482/

And the crowd against Italy in 1984 (when a certain Roberto Mancini featured for the away side) was a miserable 3,496: http://www.11v11.com/matches/england-v-italy-18-april-1984-257668/

I remember Leeds playing west brom in league cup in late 70s. They gave west brom the away part of the kippax and Leeds the home part. Rivalry between city and Leeds was fierce back then so there was no love lost on the kippax that night I can tell ya.
