Non league football.

The old council leader Roy Oldham wanted to create a team called Tameside United bitd.

He wanted to see a Tameside team in the FL under his watch.

Never gonna happen with Stalybridge Celtic , Hyde, Mossley, Curzon Ashton, Ashton United and Droylsden all having teams.

Bridge, Hyde and Droylsden have all had spells in the in the top league of the Non-league pyramid during the this millennium.
Had high hopes for Ashton united a few years ago but they although doing ok again now fell away.

Curzon were my closest team to home until I married and left Ashton and have steadily improved over the years, as a kid they were always the smaller Ashton team.

Used to enjoy a pint in the Greyhound as I got older after watching Curzon.

Don't think any of them are even in the National league north are they?

Stalybridge around 2011/12 were signing players who were booted out by league clubs at 19/20 or so and had a really good side and looked like they would go on and get promoted to the National league.

Since then, they've disappeared.

Unfortunately, don't think Ashton United will ever get the crowds to get much higher up the League pyramid. It's at the top end of the town on the way to Mossley.
Whereas Curzon are just off the M60 so could potentially get fans from the Manchester side ?
Realistically though, a town the size of Ashton (and with Hyde, Staley & Droylsden on their doorstep) cannot support a team with a thousand plus fans, which is needed to get the money to attract the better players...

Curzon have a great set-up. Very professional.
Saw them play Exeter and Wimbledon in the FA Cup 1st rounds. They were well beaten this year by Mansfield, but will have still got good money.

Been built steadily but their crowds aren't big enough.
Ashton are still the choice of traditionalists I suspect and they've got backing from Jonathan Sayer, an actor and playwright who is very vocal on twitter.

That's the problem. Bridge get 500, Hyde get similar there's 1000 between them.
Throw in Glossop just over the hill and it becomes even more difficult to sustain a Conference North club never mind a National League side.

Mossley have took a dip over the years so their crowds are down but they have a history with Howard Wilkinson even being in charge for a season. They went to Wembley in 1980.
Granada did a special programme on them.
Another club with great tradition.

Not sure Curzon have the appeal and despite the facilities it's nightmare getting in and out!
