NON-Pro cycling

Cherts. Couldn't resist it, when it was in city blue.

Knocked me £300 off because I refused to buy the red one which was the original model I went looking at.

Also got free servicing every 6 months for 3 years. Can't beat a local bike shop for service.

Does anyone know any decent rides round here? I live in Dukinfield so have easy access to some nice places for riding. Just wondered if anyone has any routes? Usually I head up towards Macclesfield/Buxton or go the other way towards Huddersfield.

Yesterday afternoon I went via Mossley into Greenfield and up Holmfirth Road, along Greenfield Road towards Holmfirth and then turned right through Lane Village, up Holme Moss and down to the Woodhead Pass. Stayed on there for about half a mile and took the turning towards Glossop and back to Oldham via Stalybridge. I did 4 counties in one afternoon, Gtr Manchester, Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Cheshire! About 42 miles but very hilly.

Instead of Holme Moss you could turn left off Greenfield Road and go through Meltham and then Marsden and drop back into Uppermill from the A62. Decent hills in both villages.

Another good route I do is up via Hollingworth Lake to Todmorden and Hebden Bridge and then turn off at Mytholmroyd and up Cragg Vale, England's longest hill at just under 6 miles long. You'll get in two hills that are in next year's TdF with Cragg Vale and Holme Moss. If you don't fancy Cragg Vale stay on the Todmorden Road to Sowerby Bridge and come back to Oldham/Ashton via Denshaw.

Nice bike by the way. I hired a Cube Peloton last year in Majorca and was very impressed.

Cheers. We haven't been up to Hollingworth lake yet, but we had planned to go up on Wednesday via denshaw. We will follow your route and go up cragg vale and holme moss for the hills.

Yeah it was the peloton I went looking at, but I refused to have a red bike. So he offered me the agree for the same price. Couldn't say no :)

Ha. I've got a red bike I'm sad to say though it's red and black, away colours!

You can still go via Denshaw. Drop into Newhey and then through Milnrow. When you get to the A58 turn left and quick right signed to Todmorden. Alternatively stay on Denshaw A672 road and head to Ripponden and pick up the Mytholmroyd turning from the opposite direction and up Cragg Vale. Good fun dropping into Littleborough but watch out for stray sheep in the road!

Cheers, will have a go of that route.

To be honest, I would have got the red one for the same reasons as it was red and black. Still, he offered the blue one for the same price so I couldn't say no! Even though it was full carbon and £300 more. Can't beat service from a LBS

Have you tried mapmyride app?
It lists rides nearby.

There's not far to look for a decent hill or two round here.
That cragg vale is a right bastard,
Good fun coming down the other side though !

Being the wrong side of 40, I struggle with the hills and question my sanity on the big ones.

I'm out in the morning heading up round diggle and delph up to brun cough reservoir. Nice little run to set me up for derby day!

Can't wait (ish)

I'm just the right side of 50 so I know what you mean. Have you done Holme Moss. Cragg Vale is long but not so steep. Holme Moss is the hardest I have done. Only 1.5 miles but unrelenting.

I'm off on a pre derby ride to Uppermill and out up Standedge in the morning. Bring them both on.

I'm on map my ride but prefer Strava via Garmin Connect.

I've not tried Holme Moss. I'll add it to my list!

Up with the birds this morning for a nice little ride, my first time at +40mph. Probably could have gone a bit faster but I bottled it on the corners.

I tried the Strava, but it's not compatible with my Suunto. Garmin look to big on my puny wrists :)

Feel brand new now, and the hills are a distant memory.

Bring on the derby !!!

I've just practically done this route this morning. Lovely sunny morning and coffee in Uppermill. And nice and fast down past Saddleworth Hotel.

The Garmin I use is an 810 which is for the bike. It's pricy but you can get it for about £11 a month from Tredz. You can always use the Strava app on your phone but strictly speaking my Garmin 810 isn't compatible with Strava but I use a third party website, GarminSync, to upload my rides. I bet there's something for your Suunto.

Holme Moss is the hardest I've done. Only short but! be careful on the Woodhead Pass. So busy with trucks it is hard to even get out but you have to shift on for the turn off to Glossop and not give the trucks an excuse to pass too close.
