NON-Pro cycling

Went up to Delamere on Saturday 62 miles and included the Yeld, I'm not used to hills so I was destroyed when I got back. Did 35 miles today to sweat yesterday's beer out and still aching from Saturday

I did a 158 charity bike from cheadle Hulme to abersoch last weekend on a borrowed bike, got the bug now.
Anyway, had to hand the bike the other day and was gutted! 'twas like saying goodbye to an old friend. So I'm going to invest.
How much would I have to be spending to get something half right, preferably 2nd hand so I get a bit more bang for my buck. Bit skint at the mo so couldn't afford to spend loads but would be interest to hear your opinions.

Ps good work on that ride

Yeah I use strava more than map my ride because more mates are on it. Just using it on my phone at the moment but looking into getting a Garmin in the future.

As for a beginner bike, you can't go wrong with a specialised Allez. About £500ish for new, or probably half that price second hand. Had mine for 4 years and it is well worth the money. Failing that my first one was a Giant and got that on eBay for about £150. So check out giants too as you get good kit for your money.

The most important thing to do is go into a shop and get the frame size right. Each brand the frame sizes vary so try different ones and remember which suits you best

Oh and if buying new or second hand, try using a local bike shop. You get far better service from those. Avoid Halfords at all costs. Local bike shops appreciate your custom and will do great deals and offer free things like servicing etc, which at places like Evans costs £50 a time

Cheers;) I'm self employed so that's a non starter. Recommend any bike shops that do decent 2nd hand deals?

i used Evans, if you have a look there now they should have some good deals, as they will be selling off 2013 models

I always find Leisure Lakes cheap. Pedalon do good deals on free kit with a purchase and Tredz do good 3 year interest free deals. My advice is, if you're serious about it, get the best you can afford. You will only spend more in the long run as pretty soon that cheap bike will annoy you. And well done from me too.

Good advice about buying the bet you can afford. Don't go daft and buy a £15k Dogma ha, but most places offer 0% for 12 months on bikes up to £1k, and 24 months on more expensive ones.

Worth checking out anyway

Cheers for the advice guys. I'm gonna look soon as I'm guessing now is a good time of year to get a deal

Yes new models out for next year now. Aldi selling cycling gear tomorrow. Don't knock it. Base layers, socks, jackets etc are great quality.
