North Stand Construction Discussion

Rowan Atkinson! Back in my day we had, Tim Brook Taylor and Marty Feldman, none of this poncy alternative comedy, comedians, were comedians and worked all hours of the day, just to put food on the table, if they were lucky enough to have a table or a floor for the table…. Etc etc
Spoken like one of those 4 Yorkshiremen!

"City Xtra understand that the club are actively conducting feasibility studies into the possible expansion of the North Stand.
Plans have been drawn up to extend the current second tier, with a new concourse and an additional level of hospitality boxes.

The expansion would also see changes to the Etihad Stadium roof, as well as the creation of a significantly larger second tier - similar to recent developments at other Premier League grounds, City Xtra understand.
The changes would see an increase in capacity by several thousand.
Manchester City are currently weighing up proposals, investigating the feasibility and possible costs of the project.
Redevelopment of the North Stand would be the latest infrastructure development at the Etihad Stadium.

Work is currently underway outside the ground for the building of a 23,500 seater arena."

Some of the info doesn’t really line up.

How would they extend the 2nd tier while adding additional hospitality boxes? You’d have to get rid of the current boxes, never mind add them, in order to extend the current 2nd tier.

No doubt an expansion is in the works but it’s likely some of the info is a little bit muddled. Maybe there was mention of hospitality seating or maybe they’d add sky boxes to the top of the tier - who knows?

Either way, great to hear that things are starting to move.

nothing new here - they've been considering it since 2014 - the planning app has all the details - the significant news we're actually waiting for is whether they do it as mirror of the South Stand (as originally planned) or as some variation to create a fan wall by merging rows 1 and 2 or rows 2 or 3 - I can't see how all 3 rows could be merged (more to follow on that)

If and when the North Stand does get extended and a new roof added. What type of roof would we expect? Similar to Arsenal?

Presume they just mean a new roof over North Stand same as opposite end
Sounded like by extending North stand and removing roof they could get extra seats in the main stand and Bell end.
Then put a new fully contoured roof on.
Would be good if it came down around the outside too and have it light up. Bit like Bayern

I can't see them leaving 2 parts of the original roof in place so yes, a new 3 part roof to blend in with the south stand. The E & W stand roofs would be higher with (perhaps) new corporate boxes above the existing seats.

They stood up remarkably well to being jumped up and down on too.
Think there is possible less problem with replacing the North Stand roof as originally this end of the ground was left open for the Comonwealth Games and may not rely on the cable net as much as the South Stand, no expert but it was built after the games finished!

The cable net was in at the games (just not used by the temporary structure at that end of the stadium). The present North stand is a mirror of the old South stand and presents the same engineering challenges.
