North Stand Construction Discussion

Just heard you are going to New York, after filming Yankee stadium and what not, maybe for us City folk head to Willets Point in Queens for our sister club's NYCFC Stadium site?
If I get the permit I will do as many as I can. $150 for a permit and no refund if they refuse it

Great video! The shape of the roof is now clear. I think the sail is a prototype. If it was permanent they would have installed more by now. Most of the rest of the external work on the hotel is done

Talking to a lad yesterday who’s working on the stadium roof. He said the steelwork’s 2/3 months behind so it’s going to be a big rush to get it done for the start of next season. They’ll just have to chuck a load of men at it.
Safety nets are starting to go up so the roof should start going on shortly.
He was talking me through dropping the old roof, it was interesting.

It is a indeed a sample, this has been submitted to the council for approval, and it notes it in that location to review the fixings at actual height and from the actual distance.

The roof won't be going on till preseason as they need to put cranes on the pitch as they did with the South stand construction.

Not expected to be ready until mid January

Those fins/ sails look awful… grey edging already coming off. Hopefully there is still time to change the spec yet again.

What on earth is going on there!

I don't think it is the edge finish coming off, PPC which it is meant to be wouldn't come off like that. Not without some force behind it, and wouldn't reveal white below it if it was scraped deliberately.

Colin I know you mention guessing it being a grey protective film coming off. Maybe, but such films are ususally white and often branded and that previously looked far too even, they usually aren't that 'perfect'. Plus the information submitted for approval does show it as grey. If it was a film, you would think they would have taken that off on the mock-up by now, and certainly before formally submitting to the council. One to watch.

It kind of looks like it has been either painted on, or splattered from above. Like with intumescent paint they use on the steel junctions but you would think those would be sealed, and it also shouldn't hit the downward angled part.

Looked back through the previous video from a couple days ago, a d it is not visible then. At least not in significant amount to spot.

A weird one

Edit, just checked back, the material condition has now been approved, and it was indeed approved as white on the sides dark grey on the edges. So unlikely to be a film.

What on Earth is the purpose of the sails?

Been keeping an eye out for this one, and it is formally in now, the application to discharge the materials condition.

From the club's and design team's own submission below.

Also some history documenting the back and forth and what say the planners had, and what they requested to change. There have been a few tweaks to the panel over the time it has been up.

Looks like the fixings are there to stay, with a view that they won't be visible from far enough.

Last, a bit about the introduction of the louvers (perforations) that we picked up on in the photos, now confirmed.

Still can't see any reasoning nor sense in not colour matching the frame edge to the sail sides, but not read every single thing yet.

Reference CDN/25/0269 for anyone wanting to see more.

Edit, worth pointing out the colour of the caps installed on site is actually different to the mock-up panel, it matches the horizontals rather than the mullions. Which then makes the choice to have the frame edge of the sails in dark grey, even more strange.
The paint is coming off already. Watch this video for a close-up of the fins, they should have used this design, which ties into the club with the tail ships on the club badge, its mentioned in the planning statement

In fairness, that pretty much IS the design they went with. With differences in the delivery and detail.

I'm sure whatever the issue with the paint/finish, they will address it before any more sails go on, which is one of the benefits of putting up a prototype early enough.

I will keep my eye on it, only spotted it because I was trying to get a look at the exposed screws that they say won’t be noticable

Colin.

Slightly off topic.

On your next visit, if you have time and drone battery power left, can you do a fly over of the Collar site from the pedestrian bridge to the left side of the North stand, just to show how big and long the Collar site is, so it can go into the Etihad Campus thread? Once the North stand redevelopment is completed, the Collar site with be next and final parcel of land to be redeveloped on the Etihad Campus.(another drone opportunity)

Thank you.
