North Stand Construction Discussion

It’s ugly from the outside.

Has an uneven look to it: one of the juts is wider and taller than the other, with the other then having a hotel stuck out at an odd tangent which makes the walk from the Met stop a bit of a detour (not great for the less able).

No idea why the hotel had to be stuck onto the stadium. There’s loads of room on site to have built a hotel which left the stadium as a stand-alone centrepiece of the site. It doesn’t even look like a football stadium when you’re stood at ground level on that picture.

The big new tier is going to look really nice on the inside when it’s done though.

It’s flipped from when the shape of the stadium was architecturally nice when we first moved in up to 2015,

…but I always felt both ends looked unfinished inside the stadium back then.

The inside of the stadium will be decent and more complete now but we’ve really sacrificed on the architectural quality of the stadium on the outside.

The function is far more important than how it looks. We’ll get the world’s best fanzone, covered, surrounded by the City Store as well as food and drink outlets. The synergy will actually be amazing on a match day.

It also links in perfectly to Coop live, facing it head on, so that attendees will feed directly into the facilities when attending events at that venue.

The entire construction is built around City Square so having the hotel as part of the structure is imperative to that design philosophy.

The walk is only big at the moment because of the hoardings. They go far wider than the actual footprint, especially on the hotel side. You’ll also be able to pass through City Square at the base rather than walk around the whole complex.

I think it’s something people will really have to experience to get a feel of how amazing the final result will be. When the big screens are on, the music is playing, people are eating & drinking and there’s a great vibe in the air. That’ll be far more important than it not being the most beautiful building in the world.

All about opinions - but I think it would look awful and basic if it was symmetrical.

This is it in a nutshell. The hotel and office are there to enclose and define the city square space. And also to offer ample facilities to such a big space. Including toilets, for that many people, not to mention bars restaurants and shops right on its edges.

The hotel also being attached to the stand and having rooms onto the pitch and vip facilities linked, is an extra level of offering few stadiums have. Which all strengthens the club's ling standing ambition of hosting the CL final.

They could for example have tried to make the hotel 'fit' the look of the stand. Something like for instance 'the jobby hotel' (which ironically doesn't fit in one bit in its own location) might have gone well with the stadium spirals.

But then the space in front for fans would very much have been secondary and compromised for gathering and atmosphere build-up purposes.

I would guess that was their main driver here, rather than the hotel blending in. Imho.

Reminds me of Wembley in that respect. Walking around there is like walking through a high street. Doesn’t feel like a match day experience until you walk up your steps to the outer ring of the stadium/in the turnstiles.

Advantages of having the hotel as part of the stadium has been pointed out above however, there’s more The club announced the development as a visitor venue which means they are looking for more than just match days, generating income for the club. Having the hotel as an integral part means that conferences can utilise the space inside the stadium such as City Hall which is a multi purpose area The commercial building also attached housing the City Store, museum and Virtual Reality floor makes this a seamless part of the stadium tour. City Square won’t just be match days it will be open every day for concert goers and day time trippers Sticking the hotel away from the stadium would negate all that Personally I like the look of it and feel it has benn sympathetically designed symmetry isn’t everything

looks like you sleep on a slope and roll out of bed :-)

Speaking as a 82 year old FOC just hope we will be able to cut through City sq after the match for the tram saving a long walk round, got a fast track tram ticket all helps to get to Picc for train back to Devon.
You will.

Does the hotel being attached mean we can include income from all of the parts, even on non-matchdays as club income?

I disagree on it's looks but there will be a second hotel built on the east side at some point.

Was told by a lighting engineer that the lights they use along the runways at the airports have a life expectancy of about 20 years. We could do with something like that, if they can be made to fit.

Although, would probably end up with a plane landing on the pitch :(
The runway lights are big units totally different from the red aircraft warning lights. The Etihad doesn't match the criteria and would have to be red in any case
The blue lights were just decoration and as such were probably some "cheap" units
