Sorry Judge - It's a bit weedy and has no real hook. Pleasant enough for early in the evening when the crowd is thin and the real dancers haven't come in yet... One to talk over / CD filler.

Oh, righto, I best stop liking it then. I'll try harder next time

Not bad... May go down OK as a filler with the current dance crowd, but wouldn't have got a second play in most places when Northern was at it's peak (early 70's). Too lightweight.

-- Fri Mar 16, 2012 6:11 pm --

Calm down ladies! I'm here to defend what I believe is 'proper' Northern Soul - It's only my opinion... If it floats your boat, then that's fine. All I'm saying is that I've not heard much 'new' stuff in recent years that I would have played / danced to in the early 70's.

I'm guessing you're from the mid 80's to 90's vintage of dancers - It all got a bit too soft / poppy for me by that time. The best dance tracks were made around 1965 - 1968 and were discovered in the early 70's. A (very) large number were Motown influenced songs - Motown started to go downhill after David Ruffin left the Temptations and Norman Whitfield started writing LSD influenced funk.

You've heard them before no doubt, (if you haven't, where have you been?) but here's three to start you off with in no particular order... BTW, I'm not into embedding videos etc (yet)

1. Eddie Parker - Love You Baby
2. Isley Brothers - Tell me it's just a rumour baby
3. Saxie Russell - Psychedelic Soul

A brief but very true tale... I got to sing 'Rumour' with Ronald Isley himself in the stage door car park behind the Fairfield Halls in Croydon about 10 years ago. (So I'm a groupie... Who isn't at some point) Ernie Isley stood there and looked at us as though we were both mad. Ronald said he was grateful for Northern Soul as it kept the Isley's in the spotlight for a few lean years.

Let's share some banter - I dare you to find a 'modern' track that changes my view!

KTF!

Hmm... Just because a record is rare doesn't mean it's a great record. It's a good dancer but doesn't have the impact that would make me jump to the dance floor. I was there when Keith Minshull bought Skiing in the Snow for a lot of money at the time - The whole Torch crowd was dancing on first play.

I'm looking for INSTANT classics - Remember Lavinda's golden rule - It's what's in the grooves that counts, not how much it costs.

No worries Lavinda, a bit of banter spices stuff up no end.

What about this then. You no doubt know it anyway. A Guy Hennigan find if I'm not mistaken from the Stafford era. Described as the last of the stompers. If you would like me to tell you how to do the embedding stuff I'll oblige so the uninitiated can sample your samples.

This is a relatively late find and one of my all time favourites, Just like Baby what has happened? The Ringleaders are mint.

There's a Northern thread on redcafe that I found searching the web but it's not up to the standard of this one, in fact I think some of them have been snooping for inspiration!!!

You clearly were not there at the time - Believe me, the place went wild. Instant classic, subsequently tarnished by overplaying at Wigan Casino (Dump).

Sorry Judge, I'm not convinced... It promises little and delivers just that. It's another early in the evening track, some may like it, but it wouldn't fill a floor in my day.

-- Fri Mar 16, 2012 11:55 pm --

Lasted until 1:02 and lost interest. Sorry. Like the idea about soulies from other clubs - I'd be happy to give them the benefit of my wisdom... ;)

That's more like it! Good post Judge - Three stars (out of five) on the Lavinda scale!

what do you define as "modern"

History lesson No.1 - Early Casino was largely Torch & Va Va's classics (Thanks to Richard Searling) - Levine & Curtis tried to compete for a while by playing stuff that was borderline jazz funk (Awful). Casino tried to do something 'different' but came up with little more than 'seconds' that wouldn't have been played at the Torch. They did succeed in resurrecting some Wheel classics like 'Baby Reconsider' etc, which made the night bearable. The best thing about going to the Casino was going to Wigan Baths the morning after. 'Coming down' underwater is an experience not to be missed.

With the very rare exception, I'd consider most stuff recorded after 1968/69 to be 'modern'. Richard Searling did some great work at the Casino, but his best work was collating the 'Cellarful' Motown series (1 & 2 in particular). Levine lost the plot when he went to Heaven (less said the better). Keith Minshull & Dave Evison and a few notable others have really 'kept the faith' and continue to play Wheel / Torch classics mixed with a few goodies from elsewhere.

To give you some idea of my 'cut off point', the last track I played in public was Lillie Bryant's brilliant 'Meet me Halfway' on Tay-ster. At the time, it was the only known copy, (much coveted by Ian Levine and Simon Soussan) owned by one Steve Vickers from Burnage, who let me play it. I decided that was the way for me to go out in style!

Lesson one over - Remember, Lavinda KNOWS Northern Soul!

Ahh..The politics of Northern Soul. I've only been around the scene for 25 years so I'm not nearly knowledgeable enough, perhaps though, we should just post the sounds without being too critical and not hang out our dirty washing in public.
This thread has been around a long time and there is some excellent listening to be had without the public point scoring. Just saying like.
