Barcelona have made a £37million bid for Spain striker David Villa as they prepare for life without Manchester City target Samuel Eto'o.

Barca's summer spending budget is only around £25m, meaning they would need to sell Eto'o to fund a move for Villa on top of their other targets.

Nou Camp president Joan Laporta would love to strike a new deal with his Cameroon striker, who is out of contract next summer.

But talks have hit a brick wall, forcing the European champions to try to cash in now rather than let him leave on a free next summer.

Reports in Spain say Inter Milan and Manchester United are keen on the 28-year-old, but concede City are the only club prepared to pay £30m and meet his huge pay demands.

Sportsmail revealed last week that he would pick up a staggering £320,000 a week at Eastlands, though he has yet to decide on whether to turn his back on Champions League football and head for the Barclays Premier League.

Real Madrid have apparently given up on signing Villa after Valencia insisted their 27-year-old Spain star was not for sale, but that has not deterred Barcelona.

They maintain an interest in Inter Milan's Zlatan Ibrahimovic and former Manchester United forward Carlos Tevez, but have made Villa their No 1 target.

Tevez, 25, wants to stay in England and is close to signing for City, with Chelsea also in the frame.

Why do people find it so hard to understand that you need a squad to compete.... All those players will not be in the amse starting 11... but they will be in the same squad... So when we get an injury or need to try something different when plan A is not working...we have options..

Options meaning an £18million player sitting on the bench only being called up if needed?

Its not about how much they cost its the variety of options... RSC gives us loads of options that we didn't have next year..... Not one of these players will be able to slack off, because they know quality is waiting on the bench..... Its a big plus.... Bench gets better, first 11 plays better, and we dont worry so much about injuries....

I totally agree with you. It's a squad game and if we had, had a stronger squad last year we would've been higher up the table...

Anyway, it seems that Barca are confident of getting Villa which is presumably good for us in terms of Eto. Apparently, they have to sell Et'o in order to afford Villa, so maybe something is happening.

Don't take any notice of the Daily Mail article. A week or so ago, they said he had agreed to join us. Yet now they make no mention of this whatsoever. It's clear evidence that they don't have a clue and are making stuff up as they go along.

And anyway, I happen to know the offer to Et'o is £1.2 billion a day because City are hell bent on ruining football.

That's probably true because £320k before tax is about £165k + per week.
