I wouldn't read too much into that. If anything, surely we'd pay MORE and then Barca would pass it on.

Thats my point - the article makes no sense whatsoever.
It's a roundabout way of Eto'o getting his bonus without Barca looking like they have given in to his demands.

Say we were going to pay £30m for him because that's their asking price. Barca then reduce said asking price to £25m which leaves us with £5m to pay the player.

Or something has got lost in translation somewhere and Barca have just said Eto'o will be given an undisclosed amount of the transfer fee but they want it to look like we've paid it.

Re: Samuel Eto'o [merged]

From what I gather, they are lowering their asking price for the transfer free in order to counter balance the loyalty bonus they want us to pay. So we would end up paying more in total.

So if his bonus is £10m and we were originally offering £25m then Barca would lower their asking price to something like £20m but ask us to pay the bonus. So £20m transfer + £10m to Eto'o. We end up paying £30m but Eto'o gets his bonus and Barca get their Villa fund.

I might be wrong, and the numbers are just examples, but that's what I think is happening.

If they want Villa that bad then Barca will sort it out with Eto'o then it's win-win

Re: Samuel Eto'o [merged]

What people is saying here doesn't make sense at all... I don't think Barca lowered the asking price so that Eto'o gets less money (because it's a % he gets). This would still mean that Barca ALSO get's less money.

I think basically, Barca has come back to City begging us to pay the loyalty bonus on top of the transfer fee. We've then came back and said that's too much money for Eto'o. Barca has then probably lowered the asking price (because they're desperate to get rid of him they'll take less money) but still wants us to pay the loyalty bonus.

all i can think of is that sammy's loyalty bonus is a percentage of transfer fee therefore by Barca dropping asking price the bonus goes down but we add it on the fee so they can pay it straight to sammy.

If we added the fee then the transfer money would go up though, and by all accounts he's due half of whatever Barca receive, not what they ask for.

this is what i mean.....

let's for arguments sake say Eto'o recieves 40% of transfer fee as his loyalty bonus.

City had 30mil fee accepted by Barca, they would then have to pay sammy a loyalty bonus of 12mil which they thought they wouldn't have to be paying.

so barca reduce asking price to 21.5mil which means they owe sammy 8.6mil which we agree to pay over and above the fee (whether we pay it or barca pay it to sammy doesn't matter..).

end result is transfer fee is still 30mil to city, however barca have now netted out at 21.5mil instead of 18mil.

simples.

I think that we will pay the loyality bonus between us. Barca need the money & we need the a world class striker, simple as that. This deal is definately ON!
