By Jake Lofdahl, Mirror.co.uk 10/07/2009
Samuel Eto’o has been Manchester City's main target is they look to make a marquee name signing this summer and flex their muscles as the richest club in the world.
With a move to the Premier League possibly on the cards here’s your essential guide to the African goal machine...
1. Samuel Eto’o Fils was born on 10 March 1981 in Douala, Cameroon. Part of a sporting family he has two professional footballer brothers: David plays for Tercera division team Reus Deportiu and Etienne plays for Mallorca.
2. As a youth Eto’o was part of the Kadji Sports Academy which also produced former Manchester United defensive midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba. Spotted by German coach Jupp Heynckes, Eto’o joined Real Madrid in 1997, starting out in the reserves. Real Madrid B were relegated to a league which banned non-EU players and so he was loaned to second division side Leganes in the 1997/98 season.
3. He was the youngest player to play at the 1998 World Cup in France at the age of 17 years and three months by some way - he was the only player at the tournament born in the 1980s. Unlike Theo Walcott for England in 2006, the teenager did actually get on the pitch, coming on as a substitute against Italy in the group stages.
4. In 2000 he was sent on loan to Mallorca for a season before the move was made permanent for a club record £4.4m. During his time with Mallorca he became the highest ever league goal scorer in the history of the club, with 54 goals in 133 games. Notably he won the Copa del Rey with the club in 2003 where he donated €30,000 in meals to the travelling fans.
5. In 2004 a three way tug of war for Eto’o between Mallorca, Madrid and Barcelona was eventually won by Barca in a transfer deal worth €24m.
6. He proved himself an outstanding goal scorer, scoring 25 times in his first season and making a huge contribution to winning La Liga with his goal against Levante clinching the title. He got to 50 goals in record time, needing just 67 matches to reach the landmark figure and outstripping Barca legends of the past such as Romario, Maradona and Johan Cruyff.
7. Eto’o has been the target for racist abuse during his career. In 2005 during an away match to Real Zaragoza the home fans made monkey-like chants to the Cameroonian as well as tossing peanuts onto the pitch whenever he had the ball. The ref made no effort to control the crowd so Eto’o attempted to leave the pitch saying “No mas†(no more) before his teammates convinced him to stay and play on. As a result of the incident Eto’o no longer brings his family to any of his matches.
8. Eto’o has suggested an aggressive streak in a couple of off-pitch incidents. Early in his career he allegedly threatened to kill television journalist Bartolome Terrassa after Eto’o took offence to one of his questions. In 2002 Eto’o's former agent Daniel Argibeaut accused him of threatening behaviour. Argibeaut claimed: “They took off my shoes, which in Cameroon means I am threatened to death.†Then last year Eto’o apologised to Phillippe Bony after headbutting the reporter following an altercation at a press conference.
9. His consistent goalscoring means Eto’o has won the African Player of the Year in 2003, 2004 and 2005 as well as finishing top scorer in the African Cup of Nations in 2006 and 2008. His 26 goals in 35 games for Barcelona in 2006 earned him the Pichichi - La Liga's golden boot award.
10. The Foundation Samuel Eto'o is almost wholly funded by the Barcelona striker and runs a football academy in the coastal town of Kribi for around 300 Cameroonians aged between 10 and 13 years old. The foundation has also donated ambulances and aims to open more academies across the country.
