some nice words from Phil Thompson in the mirror:
Raheem Sterling failed to “deliver” for
Liverpool and won’t be missed at Anfield.
That is the damning verdict of Anfield legend Phil Thompson who reckons fans will be glad to see the back of the youngster
following his £49million move to Manchester City.
And the European Cup-winning captain contrasted the reaction with the fans’ disappointment when Luis Suarez left and says Sterling is not in the same league as the Uruguayan.
“He’s certainly a good player, but he’s not a great player and that’s why you won’t find too many Liverpool fans shedding any tears for him,” said Thompson.
“Last season wasn’t a great season for him. The one before that he did well with Suarez. But last year we were looking for a lot from him, but he didn’t deliver.
“Luis Suarez is world class, but Sterling is nowhere near Suarez’s capabilities, although he’s still a very good player.
Thompson admitted Liverpool are a selling club after cashing in on Sterling and Suarez in successive summers.
“Liverpool have become a bit of a selling club now - you can’t get away from that,” he said.
“But I hope we are still a big draw and it was nice to see Nathaniel Clyne and James Milner sign, and Milner did have options to go elsewhere.”
“City are paying for potential. Raheem’s had 13 or 14 assists in the three years and has scored something like 18 league goals. You need a little bit more than that
