Re: Tactics vs Spurs - A tribute to Mancini

Excellent post.

Now how do I replicate this in FM?

VBayern Munich - Manchester City 2:0
After the impressive start in the Premier League, Bayern Munich came just right as the right test. It was the absolute top match of the Champions League matchday and the first clash between two top teams.

Roberto Mancini wanted to play with our established system, 4-2-2-2. Where the roles of our Strikers and attacking Midfield occur/look unorthodox. Dzeko and Aguero played on the front line in the Premier League so that Dzeko acted behind Aguero and played well defensively, he took over the vertical tasks while Aguero was responsible for the horizontal. This means nothing else than that Dzeko helped on the defence. While Aguero fall on the wings and should ensure more creativity and goal threat arround the Box. Against Bayern Edin was left slightly higher to play at the front, just to have a someone who keep Bayerns defence deep. Edin still managed to work a lot in his own half and supported it at least as much as Aguero, who often played slightly disoriented. Despite the efforts Dzeko was forced to move from the last third, which caused, although for greater security in combination game, less scenes in the Box. For some reason Sergio was not interessed into defending at all and was having a inside battle with hes own Energy-managerment. Both strikers took few times a break in the game, which infected our mental strenght.

Behind the two strikers again Samir Nasri and David Silva were used, which is an uncommon act in the league but also very effective. The two nominal wingers play very central - double playmakers, in particular David Silva fetches a lot of balls in front of own defense and made the game from the depths as well as in the last third. While he is playing like this we naturally dont have the witdh. Also lose the schematic system gameplay and the Fullbacks must accept this risk, which automatically provide space for counterattacks. Mancini corrected this, Richards was promoted, Nasri a little wider than usual and Clichy turned off hes offence drive. This was not very effective. Since our game lacked with width, the attacking efforts focused on small passes in the center, which is beautiful to look at, but largely was ineffective. Nasri could not get into the Duells because he allways left space, the consequence was being outplayed by an easy pass. In these moments, Nasri didnt moved back. He just stayed wide and was hoping they will lose the Ball. It was noticeable that Nasri significantly did less coverage than Silva, simply because he didnt much demanded the ball. Despite his free role David rarely escaped. Similar to the last game, where Jack Rodwell severely limited David in his possibilities. But this time it was Bayerns collective and not a single Player who marked the magican. Though the fact that he played so central and couldnt get quick enough back into his rightful position, Bayern had, especially Lahm much space. Most of the Munich attacks (46%) were outplayed on their left-side by Lahm and Ribery. Silva improved in the second Half, but our tactical problem can be reduced on these two names. While Nasri on the big European stage didnt show any kind of performance, David Silva wanted to work but was not serious enough to make an better impression. The world and european champion neglected sometimes his defensive work, acted far too centralized and did try do make magic rather than the simple pass. Apart from a few approaches he didnt prove his world class. Although Samir was more disciplined, but could not play hes game and was invisible in the important Moments. In contrast to Silva, Nasri could not impress his stamp on the game and the much vaunted double ten remained below its potential. Both were generally unsorted - this should change soon as possible.

The 2 holding Midfielders acted relatively fluid, but it was obvious that Barry took over the left half part, while Yaya Toure could be found on the right half. Unlike previous games, where Yaya took more control, this time the difference between them was not so big. Both players were similar in their play, as Yaya due Kroos and Ribery had to hold back a bit. None of them were able to take the Ball control, normally both players acted as pass-stations for Silva and Nasri, who ripped the game itself. Yaya Toure and Gareth Barry could not direct the game from the depths and while trying to overcome the midfiled caused too many holes in our defence. So Nasri and Silva was strongly focused on the construction and combination play, but this was stopped in the last third of pitch by the numerical inferiority of the Munichs Players. I do not know what it was, but this time Yaya was looking lazy. Barry on the other side was (with Richards) the Man of the first 20 minutes, he was everywhere to fill the free space and had an incrediable impact. But after 25 Mins he could keep the pace/strength and had to pay attention whats Yaya doing. Because of that, Gareth was in the appropriate situations on the wrong place or has left to much open space.

Clichy and Richards had to provide the needed width, but both had little success. Clichy has been anyway relieved by Nasri who played later more wide. Richards' caution was due to Ribery, the former Olimpique Marseille Star bound him either behind or persecuted him far into his own half and was very good in the defence. Though that, Richards was at the beginning of the game the most outstanding Player. He was at the right time at Ribery and handled to let him behind when we got posession. While we took the pace down and Silva was moving in the center, Richards had to act very aggressively on the right, so behind him was opened spaces that could use Ribery, who was simply stunning in this game. Kolo Toure debuted and build with Kompany our biggest strenght - the game in the Air. We won an incredible 76% of air duels, which is an exorbitant figure.

The Gameplay - At the beginning of the game no one would have expected such a result. The team began extremely dynamic, energetic, and came dangerously in front. After a few minutes Bayern could slowly adjust to our game. The allocations in central defense collapsed and the defence midfield found the right distance from the back four. Bayern started to play less risky passes, which we previously intercepted with a lot pressure and pressing. Although we still had superiority in terms of possession and control room, we barely was on the opportunities Box and lost in the first half hour our power. The pressing became weaker and so we started to we build Bayerns up. They were lucky that we didnt received penalty and scored instantly on the other side. Bayern got into the Game because our attacking pressing was non-existent. The midfield was full of holes, the only one strong was the back line, which made sure that we are not completely outplayed. The impact of the first 20 minutes was completely turned - now it was the sky blues, which hardly came from the own half. Bayern pressed well , their players took their positions in the order quickly, which only made them more effective. Mancini responded in the Halftime, he changed the system to a 4-2-3-1, and pointed to his double ten more to the Wings. Bayern made no mistakes and let the ball circulate. After several minutes of unsuccessful hunting Ball our players lost the desire and accuracy, which opened more space for Bayern. Mancini wanted to respond with Tevez for a more dynamic pressing, improved in the last third, but the Carlos refused to play. So Roberto had to find a other solution, instead of Tevez he brings De Jong. De Jong for Dzeko allowed us to let Yaya Toure act generally higher and more compact. Aguero played now on the central defenders and they should be put under pressure with his agility, while Nasri and Silva got back a little more freedom. Although the system was working at the defence (because of Milner & De Jong), it gived Bayern only more patience in the build-up play. The last 20 minutes were relatively uneventful.

Conclusion - Tactically, there were indeed errors, but in a detailed view they are all more or less understandable and logical - The problem lies in the professional opinion of many players who play without any problems in the league but refuse the defence work (few players are not involved enough or not good enough working) against the top teams. Another thing was the psychological component, which would create serious problems for Roberto Mancini. Dzeko mockingly applauded his substitution, Carlos Tevez refused even to play. Our players are bringing individually extreme potential and is likely to be a top class in top form, but if we want the big Coup those lacks of discipline must be eliminated by Mancini immediately - he has already started well with the sorting Tevez out.

I can't say enough how annoyed I am that we hold on to the ball so much without passing. I'm even more annoyed when we have opportunity to cross into the box for Dzeko and Aguero but don't because we hesitate or pass back to the middle. Too much hesitation and too slow to build up the attack. They need to play more freely and openly like they did against Tottenham. Holding onto the ball too much played into Bayeren's hands. The German teams are the best at quick counterattacks and limit the dribbling to a minimum.

I was saying Bobby was a great mental nd emotional Coach but criticized his gameplan. Now, after the Spurs game i m impressed. Here s my explation why.

The Team came with a very unorthodox system, a 4-2-2-2. The Wingers acted at the center rather than classical 10s. Although, they often drifted to the outside, but mostly they was active at the half left and half right positions - like double 10s. While the fullbacks Zabaleta and Clichy acted very aggressively and procured the necessary width. Edin played schematically a little higher than Sergio. Toure and Barry formed our double six.

From the start we was stronger and offered to Tottenham rarely space. We were physically and technically superior to the game and played absolutely sovereign. Tottenham tried with two skilled game makers to act on the double six, but this attempt failed badly. I think in the modern Football, space in front of the back four is a death sentence. The lack of balance at the double six rans into a humiliation. Kranjcar could never really secure Modric and his positional play was poor. He played more or less on a parallel line with Modric and left too much space between the lines, what Nasri and Silva mercilessly exploited.

Mancinis newest Coup - Double Playmakers. This principle of two Playmakers could be seen side by side in a different form than the 4-1-4-1. Supported and protected by a double-six, from forwards nd agile fullbacks, Nasri and Silva had a free role. The two sprang up everywhere on the pitch and controlled the pace of the game together. Due to the loose arrangement on central positions, they didnt ave to deal with Tottenhams D6 that much. They key here was Yaya Toure in combo with Barry. Hes now slowly but surely pushed back into the role of sixes, which he perform excellently. Yaya has limited his trips into the box. He serves mainly as a safe pass station? on the offensive and did high Pressing on the ball leaders. Yaya took a little break at the 63 - 70 mins and Spurs intermediatly won more room nd control. Gareth made our System flexible. Extra praise to Barry who played many good opening passes.

Bobby - Honorem ei, qui meritur. To came up with such an extremely complex and effective formation in such a short time is BRILLIANT. Another point for the double 10s is also the decrease at creative duties for Sergio. He can concentrate purely on the box, benefit will be more goals.

Dzekos role as the complete striker - A very interesting point. In the last game the role - or rather the evolution of Edin. Our bosnian Diamond has strongly developed on the fixed scoring striker to a complete striker, who participated in the building game, and managed to win fights, incredibly, even without loss of quality in front of goal.

As you can see, Dzeko is found all over the place. Falling in combination play with world-class skilled technicians like Nasri, Silva, Aguero , but, with hes strenght coupled with physical superiority he offers an safe option. He makes it easy in possessions for the whole Team. Dzeko played very many successful passes in the second third of the pitch. While he also moved his opponent Kaboul out of their defensive. Impressive stat, Edin had more contacts with the ball in Midfield as his partner Sergio. Mancini has discovered the possibilities of Dzeko (which are very complex - hes not a striker who just waits for the ball) and use him very well now. Edin deliberately in certain situations makes few more steps back, so he can participate in the development of the game. Another point, Mancini let them do positions chaning. So Dzeko falls down nd automaticly fits into Silvas Position, same with Aguero at left with Nasri. However i didn t noticed that at the Defence, there was moments where out Player completly forget that. Richards (my view) is a better Player for chaning the Position with Vinnie. Lescott nd Clichly/Kolarov have a big space to improve at this point.

Conclusion - In a wonderful football game Mancini managed to make a setup which put our strong performance, individually and collectively, on the upper hand. Deserved 5-1 away win. Our Team had from the beginning the game under control and took at the end 59% ball possession, the advantage of Spurs offesive Double Six. @arry, in case you missed it, that was Robertos Response. On the pitch.

Where did you learn all this tactic stuff?

Well done balkanno. Some players also need to stop trying to dribble the ball into the net because it's not working. Sometimes the easy pass is the better option.

Everyone should read your breakdowns -- maybe even Mancini ;)

Credit to Bayen.

Their passing pattern's very simple but superbly effective.

I'd say they keep the ball even better than Barcelona, only not as entertaining.

Like Toure said, a good lesson about simple football.

I hope De Jong, Razak and Hagreaves will give us that simplicity and rockiness. Boyata has a calming influence too, when he comes back next season.

This present team has too much flair I'm afraid.

It's normal because last year we seemed to lack flair. It's about time a balance's reached upon.
