Seems to be a lot of happy clappers on here or maybe I'm just more pessimistic than most. I do understand we've been handcuffed by player wages etc. My view of the window:

<snip>

Overall - I think we've only marginally strengthened the squad, got rid of some high wage earners but our replacements seem to be straight swaps (with a bit more potential I guess with Nastasic & Sinclair over AJ & Savic).

Agreed, that said we look far more healthier than we did last night.
But, but, but, it's not bad
As De Niro said, we look a lot more comfortable than yesterday now we have Javi, Nasty, Sinclair and Maicon (maybe). Not trying to say it's bad, just IMO, it's not actually big upgrades.

Hey, Javi may be the next Mascherano, Nasty may be the next Vidic, Sinclair may turn into the next Ryan Giggs (without the brother wife shagging bit hopefully) and Maicon may score the only goal in the CL final for us. See, I can be optimistic also ;-)

Happy with our signings in the end, not ecstatic as we could have signed some real heavy hitters like De Rossi and Thiago Silva, but considering how many targets we missed we've ended up with a good set of players. Maicon is a potential major bargain but only if he shows the form he came into late last season with Inter and not the decline he was on before that. Garcia I haven't seen much of but the reviews of him are very positive from people who watch him regularly - just hope he can offer a fair bit of creativity which we sometimes are missing in midfield. Sinclair will give us something we've lacked since Bellamy was sold, directness and pace. Nastasic sounds a fantastic prospect and Rodwell is another player with great upside.

Ade out - Good news but shit price
RSC out (loan) - good news but only a loan (bosman next year)
Bridge out (loan) - good news but I bet we are only getting a tiny part of his wage (bosman next year)
Boyata out (loan) - last chance saloon I think for Dedryk
McGivern out (loan) - last chance saloon I think for Ryan
Savic out (swap deal) - neutral/happy on this, didn't look the part
NDJ out - Bad news and absolutely shit price
AJ out - not bothered and reasonable fee (the only one!!)

Wright in - meh, 3rd choice keeper on a free (nothing to see here)
Garcia in? - reasonably happy but an NDJ replacement - is he £13m worth better than NDJ? Couldn't we have just bunged NDJ another £6m over 4 years and saved ourselves £7m + agent fees (NDJ sold for £3.5m)?
Sinclair in - decent fee but probably going to be an AJ-like super sub. May come good but no guarantees.
Maicon in - wtf is this about when we have 2 class RBs. Could end up with him coasting for 2 years plus I'd bet he is on silly money. Jury definitely out on this.
Nastasic - one for the future? Roughly equal to £14-£17m on a 19 year old CB (depending what you value Savic at). That's a shitload of money for a 19 year old defender. Hope he comes good.
Rodwell in - reasonably happy on this, need to see how he settles

Overall - I think we've only marginally strengthened the squad, got rid of some high wage earners but our replacements seem to be straight swaps (with a bit more potential I guess with Nastasic & Sinclair over AJ & Savic).
Significantly stronger.

You say Maicon = Richards and Garcia= De Jong.

But can Richards attack like Maicon? Brazilian international with a reputation for spectacular goals and attacking play. He's getting on, but still a significant addition. It's not isntead of Richards. It's in addition. And Richards misses a lot of games.

De Jong's game is limited. He's a pure defensive midfielder whose game was becoming limited. He had 14 Premiership appearances last season. AJ had 28. He was being marginalised. Barry and De Jong play in the same deep midfield position, but their games are very different. Garcia can play football. De Jong's job was purely to protect the back 4, win the ball and give it simple. Garcia can do a lot more than that

The Serb defender is an unknown to me. But he seems to be very highly rated and he played a lot of games for Fiorentina. Mancini says he has the potential to be one of the top defenders for many years to come

-- Sat Sep 01, 2012 12:33 am --

Ultimately DJ wanted more game time it would appear - he knew what was coming and he was getting pushed down the pecking order rather than create shit he refused to sign a new contract frcing the club to sell

win win for everybody

No player absolutely no player is bigger than the club - the only two things that remain the same in football are us the fans and change

For those who think we haven't significantly strengthened the squad, Jose has just brought in Essien (albeit on loan). It's not all about getting young superstars in their prime.

Happy Days, v good transfer window for club

- got rid of the Hughes crap and Johnson(one trick bag of shit), proved we are no endless stream of money to selling clubs, and ended the window with a better squad.
