Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Lescott, Clichy, Yaya, Barry, Silva, Nasri, Tevez, Aguero

4-2-3-1

Kind of familiar looking isn't it.

Looks familiar and lovely from where I'm sat. Might not mean your selection completely but 4-2-3-1 for me provides the familiarity that the players need right now to build momentum and gain confidence. Last night we appeared devoid of those.

How did you know what the topic was about.

The 3-5-2 is due to the lack of quality you have through out the squad. It has not worked and Mancini is probably raging. Yesterday was an audition for the big matches coming up soon.

Can't agree with that on any level. 3/5/2 is something Mancini has tried at various times since he came to City. I know that it worked on a couple of occasions when we were trying to see games out last season. There is no lack of quality throughout the squad, that's just a surreal observation in my opinion. The team we put out last night should've slaughtered Villa.

Regarding yesterday being an audition for the big matches coming up, again, completely disagree. Yesterday was about giving game time to players who need matches, and keeping key players fresh for the Fulham/Dortmund games.

The larger issue is one of motivation. Were we motivated enough to want to beat Villa last night. By the sounds of things we really weren't. Now, some would say that this is a blessing in disguise and the free time will help us in the league/CL. I believe that winning breeds confidence which helps you keep winning, and losing/drawing saps confidence in a very corrosive way when you're a top team.

Fulham/Dortmund/Sunderland is a triumvirate of games which will define whether the last month has been a blip or whether there's a bigger problem.

To answer the OP's question about what I'd do from a technical/tactical stand point. First and foremost I'd show the players videos of last season's games to point out the ferocity with which we closed people down and the amount of pressure we that put the opposition under.

Next I'd make them spend a week re-learning how to pass the able accurately over 5/10 yards under pressure.

Finally I'd set them up with the same formation as last season with identical personnel with the exception of Garcia in for NDJ. That is to say something like this:

PZ.....VK......JL.....GC

........YT....JG..........

JM..................DS....

......ED...SA..........

My personal opinion on where the problems stem from are the chopping and changing of the back 4 and the system that the team employs in the defensive phase or when they lose possession. We've reverted to something which we didn't do very much last season, but did a whole lot the season before under Mancini, which is that when we lose possession rather than concerning ourselves with winning the ball back, we concern ourselves with immediately getting back into a defensive block. Playing that way needlessly surrenders too much possession to the opposition.

It's all about a lack of motivation for me.

The question is should it start from the players or the manager.

There has been a lack of intensity this season, a general malaise.

When things are going well, Mancini style of management overcomes all underlying currents and barriers.

Unfortunately, when things don't go for you in terms of results, Roberto's preferred distance can be seen as a fault, as the very top players switch off, blaming everyone but themselves.

It's endemic of our poor away form for so long. These guys believe they can still win in third gear and teams have cottoned on we're NOT THAT GOOD.

By that, I mean, a Barca or Real gearbox.

I agree about the third gear bit..last night I suspected the team just thought they only needed to turn up. Went with a Villa friend and she commented that City played like it was a training game..no desire, commintment, intensity, passion.

Go back to basics and what worked last year. There were 2 things that worked perfect and what should never had changed. They were a 4-2-3-1 with Barry and Yaya holding. Or a 4-2-2-2 when Tevez came back. But in both of those formations the players interchanged, moved everywhere, closed high up the pitch and passed with a high tempo. With any of those formations or styles of play the basics remain the basics remain the same. Barry needs to play to allow others to shine. Players need to work hard, keep possession and look generally more bothered than they do at the moment.

I'd probably talk to the players in half time of extra time in the league cup. Just seems like a managerial thing to do.

I heard on GMR he just stood there.

Seems very strange.

Given the substantial amount of players that could benefit from getting some game time, one would think the League Cup could be a a good opportunity.

Would be for me, if I was the manager.

Hart, Zab, Kompany, Lescott, Clichy, Barry, Garcia, Rodwell, Silva, Yaya, Aguero.

If Rodwell unfit play Milner.

Emphasis on a clean sheet.

Tevez_____________Dzeko_____________Aguero

IF Silva still having a nightmare replace him with Barry or Milner to play as DM, and push Yaya forward.
