Who said City couldn't play? City couldn't play,City couldn't play,Who said City couldn't play,City couldn't play football. From the 30's.The tune goes something like Oh my what a rotten song .We ain't got no Istree.

Interesting. Never heard anyone else mention this song. My Dad used to sing it to us in the early 70s. You can insert names of players as you please:

After the ball was centred, after the whistle blew
Frannie got the ball and down the wing he flew
He passed the ball to Colin Bell and Colin Bell passed it back
Frannie took a flying shot and knocked the goalie flat
Where was the goalie when the ball was in the net?
He was up the goalpost with his knickers round his neck, singing...

Who said City couldn't play, City couldn't play, City couldn't play?
Who said City couldn't play, City couldn't play football?

I can't give you the tune. Dad sang it all the time. It was around the time of the Mercer years. I could You Tube me singing it for the tune...

It's from long before that. I remember one of Gary James' books (the full history of the club) says that the crowds were singing it when they paraded the 1904 FA Cup or something like that. It might even go back to the 19th century.
