Old Maine Road photos thread

i don't think he did any real arithmetic.
i don't even think there was any sort of turnstile counting system as such in place for him to fiddle.
he just looked round the ground in the first half,
guessed the attendance and halved it.
job's reet.
That doesn’t add up (no pun intended). If you’re skimming money off the gate then you need to know from what figure you are skimming.

I remember one match in 1993 when I was working in Manchester for the day and staying in a hotel near the airport. It was a League Cup tie against Chelsea. I misjudged the traffic on Princess Parkway and arrived near Maine Road around ten minutes before kick-off.

I went for the Kippax as it was closest to my car. The queues were horrendous and the match had been going for 25 minutes before I got through the turnstiles. The attendance given was 16,713.

i see your point.

when he took over in '73 (was it?) we were in a fairly strong position.
announced attendances were quite possibly correct(ish) at that time.

he sat there week in week out and, just like us, was able to give an off-the-cuff guess at the real figure.

i have no proof for my theory.
just chatting, really, matey.

what we need here is someone who actually worked on a turnstile that could verify if or if not the punters were counted and the figure passed on to him at half-time.

Mind yer car Mister?

@BertTrautmann'sParachute
which one is you?

Our first game in Europe was the home game vs Fenerbahce in 1968. Since the arrival of Joe and big Mal our attendances grew substantially and we had the odd 60k crowd. Fans were up for this tie and many were speculating what the gate figure would be and it was commonly expected that it would be another full house. It certainly looked and felt like it, there were no gaps to be seen but to everyone's surprise (those that were there) the official figure was less than 39000. Nobody believed that and I still don't either, but for once Swales couldn't be blamed as he wasn't on the Board then (I don't think).

I was at that, and although I don't believe 39000, it wasn't rammed either. The Kippax certainly wasn't.

This must be late 73-74 because Tueart and Horsewill both feature, but so do Law and Summerbee who weren't around for the start of 74-75
Presumably a sponsorship deal, but I haven't a clue about the lady in red.
Think Law’s last game was Texaco cup that summer (not the United relegation as often incorrectly quoted)
