Took this with my disposable camera so apologies for the crap picture, this was the inauguration ceremony for the forward with franny movement. I’ve got another one with the balloons coming out I’ll try and upload

Think I remember in programme must have been late 70s or early 80s a design of the stadium where all the stands matched the Main stand which looked stunning for the time.

I remember that article but I think the Kippax roof was to be the same as the Main stand and the Platt Lane roof was to be the same as the North stand.

What was the building behind the Kippax at the back if the car park. I don't remember there being anything there?

St. Edward’s. For a short period Royle had them train there shortly before the match then travel the short distance from the school, through the crowds, to the ground.

There’s another photo that’s appeared on this thread that is similarly airborne, but that was on a match day and there were plenty of cars in the car park and the surrounding streets. What’s so striking about this photo is the almost complete absence of cars (parked or driving) on the streets around Maine Road - although this one may have been taken a few years earlier tbf.

My dad lived in Hulme/Moss Side in the ‘30s and ‘40s (when he wasn’t an evacuee) and I know he’s said to me previously that the only people near where he lived who had a car were the two guys that owned the local cinema and chippy.

Drive down pretty much any terraced street now and you’ll struggle to find a parking spot!

I think it was against Stoke mate, not Wednesday.

attendance 84,569 = a record for a game outside london.

The Sheffield Wednesday replay was on an…err…Wednesday in February so unlikely to be light like that with the ground full.

Also the attendance you gave in the exact figure for the Stoke quarter final which seems more likely tbh.

It’s an incredible photo for lots of reasons. It was a fucking beast of a stadium, when full. Sometimes hard to generate an atmosphere when half full. There were exceptions, but most of the best Maine Road atmospheres the crowd would have been over 30,000 I’d say.
