Old Maine Road photos thread

Ah, a different time, different world, thats always been my fav pic of Maine Road, its my screen saver as well - beautiful

Blue arrow is the railing where my dad used to plonk me on to watch the games. I only ever saw him Saturday afternoon and Sundays as he was always working in the week. Special times.

Took this with my disposable camera so apologies for the crap picture, this was the inauguration ceremony for the forward with franny movement. I’ve got another one with the balloons coming out I’ll try and upload
The camera does not lie. The drab scene captures the mood of the fans who were watching on helpless as the club was systematically being destroyed by a tyrant.

The Sheffield Wednesday replay was on an…err…Wednesday in February so unlikely to be light like that with the ground full.

Also the attendance you gave in the exact figure for the Stoke quarter final which seems more likely tbh.
The crowd for the Sheffield Wednesday replay was 68,614, and the game was played on a Wednesday afternoon appropriately. There were no floodlights back then.

Remember this well - franny's first match as chairman, Ipswich when Rocky produced that bit of pure skill and we all felt it was the start of an upturn now we finally had got rid of swales and the saviour was in charge..... Oh dear.... ;)

I’m aware about the floodlights, which is obvious from the photo in any event, but it just struck me that the photo doesn’t look like it’s February to me. Only a couple of chimneys bellowing smoke perhaps providing a clue. I could very well be wrong. Difficult to tell without knowing how long before kick off it was taken. Certainly if it was five minutes before kick off the gaps in the corner of the Kippax nearest to the Platt Lane suggest it’s closer to 68k than 84k, but there’s no one on the (slightly worn) pitch yet and plenty are still turning up so it could be earlier than that.

Fuck knows!

Wednesday afternoon most people were probably at work.

supposedly this was in 1934.

i'm guessing the f.a. cup replay against sheffield wednesday
(2-0 win after drawing 2-2 at their place)
attendance 84,569 = a record for a game outside london.

Imagine owning the white car centre bottom left & leaving 10 minutes early because you wanted to get home to watch the latest Michael Mcintyre pile of celebrity crap on the TV :-)

In the mid thirties, many people wouldn’t have had a job, plus a decent number of women wouldn’t have had full time jobs, although the counterpoint is that many wouldn’t have been able to afford to burn coal all day I guess.
I can just about make out my Gran and Grandads house just off Lloyd St. Even if it was minus 20 he wouldn't have had a fire going in the middle of the afternoon
