Old Match Day Pubs Around Maine Road

The Old Abbey in the science park was where we (the Dublin OSC) did our drinking before games. Used to meet up with a lot of lads from the Ancoats branch. There must be a few on here who remember that.

Not far from the ardri I think

No I’m
Mixed up with
The Ducie Arms

The only pubs I ever frequented pre-match at Maine Rd were The Grafton (Holts house near the Uni) and The Fallowfield on Wilbraham Rd. The Grafton is still there - not a pub that relied on match day custom. The Fallowfield shut its doors when there was still a season left at Maine Rd - knew what was coming and sold the land it stood on to a developer who built a block of flats.

Both shit boozers tbh, but both easy to get served in - whereas pre-match, the boozers in the immediate vicinity of the ground looked like you'd never get through the front door they were that hammered.
The Grafton Hotel was better!

No one seems to have mentioned the Robin Hood on Maine Rd itself only went in once didn't feel welcome. If my mate drove we would park at the gates of Alexander Park and pop in the Claremont for one on route to the Bee Hive, rough as,as well as match day crowd lots of Irish rags would be in there. Joe Holtes as I remember and the Bee Hive was Hydes or have got that back to front.

Didn’t that become a kitchen / fridge shop?

Robin Hood had a sign over the bar saying, “Strictly no balaclavas at the bar”

Me & my mates used to congregate pre-match in the Osborne back in the 70's & 80's.. Perfectly placed with a short stroll to the ground. Actually there is something like that near the Etihad, albeit 15 minutes walk away - The Bradford on Bradford Road. That's where we go nowadays. Trouble is, you either like Holts or you don't.
I'll have to go there and give it a try.
