First point.
This is not an anti Mancini thread, i wouldnt dare, and he has to answer to no-one with the possible exception of our owners, however, i am old school, from the days when all teams played 4 games over Xmas and New Year, and before the (awful) squad rotation policies now followed by most teams.

I appreciate the game has changed, but from when i first started watching football (1960`s) you rarely if ever changed a winning team, and the only real reasons to change a player were injury, suspension, or loss of form. I appreciate with a 25 man squad we constantly try to keep everbody happy, but realistically this isnt possible, and more to the point results suffer as a consequence.

This is not a knee jerk, post match reaction, i wasnt happy as soon as i realised players that i, (and i believe most others would agree with ) would be in our best starting line-up, were rested, ie clichy, Richards, Silva, Aguero and Mario, were (i suspect) all rested and saved for the Liverpool match. I accept that had these all been playing, there is still no guarantee that we would have won, but i think we would have had a far better chance. Indeed Roberto almost seems to agree, as from half time onwards, when things were not going well, the resting policy went straight ouit of the window.

Repeating the point, that i have always felt this way, i wasnt happy when Dzeko was rested / rotated after scoring 4 at Spuds, and i couldnt understand resting David Silva against Newcastle, (and still bringing him on, and risking Injury towards the end, when we were already winning.

Sure, i`m not the manager, Roberto is, but i have NEVER understood this obsession with resting players for future games, if you are playing well in the team, you should stay in the team until you are either injured or suspended, the time to totate and give other squad members a game, is when the game is won, eg 3 goals up 15/20 mins to go.

If we had gone down this route, (and won at Sunderland) whats the worst we could be facing now, injured or tired / exhausted players unable to play against Liverpool, so with 3 points (already in the bag other squad members who (may have) had to come in would have had the chance to raise our points total from the 2 games from 3 to 4 or 6 we may indeed with a potentially weakened team have lost to Liverpool and stayed on 3 points, but that is now the BEST points we can hope for, and we have to win to achieve that.

Pretty much, everytime i have questioned the team selection(as players have been rotated) we have still won, and i presume must will say that proves the decision to rotate was right. Personally i think we have continued to do well and win DESPITE rotation /resting, not because of it.

Winning the next match, is by and large not relevant, if you dont win the current match.

As Cup holders, i think EVERY match from hereon in is a priority, (ok Europa League should be assessed on an ongoing basis, and weighed up according to whether or not we are still in the other 2 cups) therefore , our strongest available team should start EVERY game, substitutions should be for injury, or tactical, as and when needs must, and for rotation / resting only when the game is won.

thoughts?

Excellent post.
I'm with you, you play your strongest possible team if you have any ambition of winning the league. I was fuming and deflated to fuck when that final whistle went, but not at an off side goal, fair play to sunderland, they got a stroke of luck. No, I was fuming at how it was clear from the off that the side he started with wasn't full strength, and with the opportunity that had presented itself to us i.e. ALL of our rivals dropping points, a full strength team should've been put out to ensure we capitalized on that opportunity. Still fucked off

I'm the same play your best team all the time Milner and Dzeko for me could play every game no problem and a rule should be regarding strikers is when they are scoring keep playing them they are not tied when they are scoring

I see what you're trying to say.
But disagree.

What if we'd played full strong yesterday and lost?
You can't guarantee we wouldn't have, and then what? We have Liverpool tomorrow with our strongest 11 all knackered. We then may lose that as well. Whereas now we have a few fresher players, and every chance of picking up 3 points.

Yesterday's team should've beaten Sunderland, he didn't play a weak team, because it was better than Sunderland. We were unlucky, add that to some terrible individual performances and that's why we lost.

Playing one game at a time this holiday has been the problem. We should have played The Baggies and Mon's Mongrels at the same time - six points in the bag. Mon would have bored Woy to death before the latter had managed to knock himself senseless on the hoardings.

We had the best 11 (from the squad) playing yesterday at the tail end of the match.

Why put our talented players on the bench in the first place? Start them for it dovetailed with our strong suit of football that has terrified our opponents. Rather than pussy footing with a holding midfielder and exhaust our attacking players (with one less in our offensive arsenal).

At the end of the day they (Yaya, Barry et al) were expended and knackered chasing a winner and now I wonder whether they are rested enough (Silva, Aguero, Nasri et al) for the forthcoming game/s.

The bottom line is that the negative result is damaging IMO.

This is not hindsight on my part. I have been clamouring and advocating our strong suit of football style & flair for quite a while.

This was reinforced by analysing Hughes 7 draws and his Sunderland win on his last day as a City's manager .

I'm no statto but i would be very interested to see how many top managers in any league around the world have played an unchanged side for let's say more than 10 games in a row..I'm guessing none.
You cannot compare football now to 1960's...it has moved on ...there is a whole science about training/recovery times, diet etc etc...No comparison...All the top teams rotate...All of them.

...the reason is beacuse he is a triple title winning manager and we are sat on our arses typing sh1t

Have Faith in bobby, i never thought id see us lifting a cup in my lifetime

Not only did he make that happen he foretold it half way through the season when everyone else was willing us to fail and no one expected us to even make the top 4

He said we will win 2 trophies this season and im going with that

cc and prem

Keep the faith!

Yes its true. My contention is the style of football that has got us thus far.

We have the SQUAD DEPTH.
