Online PC Gaming

I just remember seeing a thread a while back about SWTOR and was curious as to what games Bluemooners play, or have played.

Me, i'm a bit of a tightarse where gaming is concerned, and have never played a game that requires a monthly subscription fee.

Games played:

Guild Wars: had all 3 of the first expansions, but in my opinion the developers screwed up...they introduced non-player characters that you could use in your team, and this basically killed the teamplay aspect of the game. Might give Guild Wars 2 a try though, its out next month.

Lord of the Rings Online: Probably the game I have played most, when it became free to play in late 2010. You have to avoid the Roleplayers though...people running around, convinced that they're Gandalf, etc. Spent around £30 on this for expansion packs..it is technically possible to unlock the quest packs without paying, but it requires a LOT of effort and monotony. I have a level 54 on this game, max is 75, and will become 80 in Autumn.

Regnum Online: Frankly, don't bother :P It is a very buggy, clunky game. Great concept though, when you begin the game you choose a realm, then do all the boring levelling up, until you reach level 50ish. Then, you go out and battle the other realms in the "War Zone", a huge plain with forts, towers, and castles to capture. If one realm captures all the buildings of another realm, then you break through their gates and get to pillage their realm and capital, basically. I was shit at this and was only ever on the receiving end of a beating. Used to play it back in 2009, was good entertainment if I was wagging Sixth Form but otherwise, don't bother. The game developers are based in Argentina, and as a result Spanish is the first language of the game, but they've done okay to make it last this long.

What do you play?

People really pretending to be these characters? Do they try and talk in the same voice etc?

CS 1.6 is the game I've played most online, I tried wow once but it's just not my kind of game.

Yeah mate, its cringeworthy. I asked a guy for help with a quest once and he told me to piss off because he was a Dwarf and my guy was an Elf. Truly sad, but great fun if you dodge those kind of players.

Civilisation, immense game!

Not heard of that mate! Whats it all about?

its similar to games like age of empires and stuff. turn based strategy based game, you start off with two units a settler and a warrior then you have to research new technologies and expand your civilisation and army however you please. can win through total domination of the map or through cultural victories and stuff like that. although you should be warned that it gets dangerously addictive. Civ IV and V are the best ones though, 1-3 arent that great but the improvements they make each time are brilliant and its now a top top game

That sounds pretty good! I have an Age of Empires game on my PS2, I know the addictive feeling you're describing ;)

Played Counter Strike 1.6 back in the day and now Ive got a beta key for the new CS:Global Offensive so I play that occasionally which is decent.

haha, i've lost hours of my life constructing imaginary roads and buildings while using tanks to blow up some poor bastards spearman. although i think dressing up like an army commander at my computer might be a little excessive

As long as nobody sees, its 100% acceptable ;)
I was pretty sadistic on AOE too...I used to always choose a map, that had 4 islands in the sea. I'd make a huge navy, and slowly take over each island one by one. Then on the last one, i'd move my army into it, build a wall and keep them penned in, so they only had half an island left in the entire map. They kept trying to surrender, but I wasn't having any. Slow, victorious win.

-- Fri Mar 30, 2012 1:00 pm --

i use to play runescape about 6 years ago.

Same with me, except it was around 8 years ago. Id've been 13 at the time.
I admire the guys who made it...started out in a spare room in their mums house, and now its one of the most recognisable online names there is.

Lost its novelty though - I played for like 6 months, after spending hours doing pointless stuff, so I could sell pixelated coal or jewellery. Its the devil's work, and dangerously addictive. I knew one lad in my class who screwed up his GCSE's due to that game.

haha, on civ you can interact with the other leaders and when they try and negotiate a peace treaty you can take them for all they're worth. used to force them into agreeing open borders then i'd surround their cities with army units and once the peace treaty had expired i could just crush them again.
sometimes i worry about myself.
