Open borders

We should have completely open borders. Humans moving country for a better life are no different to those of us that move to a posher bit of town for the same. Eventually if you get too many bellends coming over the country will be crap so they'll stop coming - it'll naturally balance itself out

Why are 'open borders' OK between Lancashire and Yorkshire, but not between England and France?

Where do you draw the line? Should each parish have controlled borders? I mean, what about the cnuts coming into Bury from Radcliffe? Let alone Scousers!

There were never absolute open borders even within Schengen, which we never joined. It's just an obsession that some people who hate foreigners have latched onto. Actually, we would probably have more control if we were in Schengen as we would be in collaboration with the other countries involved and have access to the database.

Everyone would have to carry some form of I.D. though.
Any dodgy characters would be weeded out that way.

I personally don't have an issue with that, but as a nation we are resistant. Ridiculous really considering we all attach smart devices to ourselves that harvest levels of data that the stazi or as could only dream of!

I'm all for ID cards. They would cut out a whole load of abuse, and it would solve the voting issue in a fair way. What's more, when we eventually see sense and rejoin the EU, they could be passports within the EU, meaning many people would never need a passport as such.

Again, ID cards would stop a lot of the immigration that people find offensive as you would not be able to get a job or access to services without one. But, as so often in this country, people will the ends but not the means.

ID cards would only work and be approved of by the majortiy if bar name, dob, photo, nationality nothing else was present and they had no chip or digital information on them.

every time they have been sugested there has been strong opposition on dara sharing fears (though everyone freely gives up their data now to twats like facebook and twitter)

Your plastic driving licence carries data about your driving offences, so why should an I.D. cardc arrying details of somebody's criminal activities (or not) be a problem?
Unless of course that person is a criminal....

In theory? No. Governments need to be able to plan for their housing, education, health and well-being of anyone arriving. Else they end up failing those arriving and those already here. Ideally you’d want a situation where the cap on net migration was set at a local level.

In one paragraph you have summed up the failure of the Conservative Government. Well done!

would it though? Many EU member states require you to carry the official ID with you ( technically as a Brit you don't have one so when visiting France you are supposed to have your passport or a photocopy of it on you at all time ) - are you saying that none of those countries have dodgy citizens because of id cards?

No.
What I am saying is that the I.D. cards would carry additional information to name, address, D.O.B. Details of criminal records and health status would be on the cards too.

You do recall the colossal balls up and waste of huge sums of money when the last Labour Govt tried to integrate medical records on a central database? Why should my medical records be accessible on a card that is there for ID purposes anyway?

I can see the attraction of the card on the face of things but it would just be a costly way for the Govt to enrich their mates creating a duplicate system where they can access information they already have.

Interesting post.
So it’s similar to us wanting to move to a posher part of town yes?
So why not try this social experiment.
Take yourself and family over to Alderley Edge or Prestbury.
Knock on a few doors and say we had a roof over my head, food in our mouth's but we sold up and used all our savings to come over to you.
We are now skint so can we come and live with you for nowt as we want a better life.
Unfortunately you cannot do any checks on us but if we turn out to be bellends it will stop others wanting to come and live with you so it’s a win win situation.
Just let us know how you get on.

We have open borders between the countries of our Union. 29 countries have open borders for people via the EU - albeit to varying degrees with the Schengen Agreement being the most open.

Mad when you think that in my lifetime there were fences and minefields separating East Europe from the West. Now. All gone.

Sometimes we forget the progress we have made. I mean, not us. We went backwards.

People move all the time. Sometimes into posh areas. Social mobility is a positive.

It’s a nice idea Bob but the reality is that social divisions are widening. I think as we move into the future this will continue to intensify as resources and freedoms of action become scarcer. Those having privilege will become fewer but more determined and the numbers of those with relatively little will grow. Both locally and globally.

As the likes of India, Brazil etc continue to grow, markets will without doubt become more competitive particularly for mass produced, low skilled products. If the Uk is to remain competitive world wide, it will need to become a high skilled, super efficient workforce. It will result in those not being able to adapt ending up in the poorly paid service jobs. It’s bound to have an impact on social mobility

Thanks for the history lesson, that’s not an open border policy, a border exists.

Is having an open border policy where millions could arrive from anywhere on planet earth in to a country thus swamping the education, health and housing systems the right approach or do countries need a cap in place (whatever that number might be) to prevent those services being overwhelmed?

Should we not have internal open borders within England? If talent migrates towards London then London has larger investment, needs bigger state services, and more companies set up there and it becomes self perpetuated - would restricting movement better distribute wealth and jobs? Crazy idea? It was Labour policy for Birmingham back in the 1960s - obviously an unmitigated disaster as a city of a thousand trades became reliant on the motor industry and a one company British Leyland - however was the policy of wealth and job distribution actually wrong?
