Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.

I saw them play 'Electricity' outside Virgin records on Market Street when it was released in 1980. They did a series of similar promotional performances, signing singles etc, around the UK at the time I believe.

Just the two of them and a drum machine, watched by about 30 lost souls on their lunch breaks. They were excellent.

Piccadilly Rats have probably had bigger audiences.
Or Frank Sidebottom

First band I ever saw at the Apollo. Love them. Still listen to a lot of their early stuff - their best in my opinion. Dazzleships was great, although some didn't like it, and a Peter Saville designed cover to boot. Last time I saw them was at Bloomfield Road about 5 years ago, supporting A-Ha and there was no doubting afterwards from the crowd reaction who should have been given top billing. They've always come across as really decent guys too and interviews with them are always eloquent and interesting. Hopefully they'll continue for some time to come.

Andy and Paul must be coining in the royalties just recently.
Every time I turn the TV on ,there is an advert on playing 40 years old OMD songs.
Renault E-Tech electric cars have "Electricity" as the backing tune.
And M&S have "Enola Gay" playing away in the background.
Just goes to prove that great music will always be great music in perpetuity.
Must've sold their back catalogue?

I saw them when they were unknown as a supporting act for Gary Numan. Coventry Theatre, 1980ish, when Cars was at Number 1. They were two blokes and a reel-to-reel tape machine. I have little recollection of the performance but I really like a lot of their stuff, Messages is sublime.

Never really a big fan of 'electronic' music but OMD wrote songs with great melodies and hooks. In 1979 my brother came home with their very first single Electricity (first release, Factory records?) and I still remember it was in a hand made cardboard sleeve. Still is one of the best songs from that era, and pretty sure it was released a couple more times before it became a hit.

Another of their early hits was Messages, absolutely brilliant

Maybe it is my age but where is the next John Peel to champion new bands, instead of the usual dross of manufactured dirge
I bloody love the intro to Messages.

I wasn't a massive fan of electronic stuff either, was more into The Jam and The Specials. There will always be a place in my heart for OMD though.
