Organ donation

It still would be the persons decision completely - they have the choice to opt out.

Im registered as an organ donar to but if the system was changed to an opt out system i would opt out. Simply because that kind of system is morally corrupt and wrong and i want no part of it. Also Blue_bird that is a disgusting response and a logically flawed reply if you think about it a bit more.

When do you opt out ? As a child when you dont fully understand things yet ? Do you opt out once you leave school and start uni and you've got a million and one things going on in your life ? What happens if you can't physically opt out and you're paralized in bed screaming in your mind please don't take my organs ? What if you were severly mentaly handicapped and just couldn't understand what opting out or in ment ?

And how is my response so disgusting? It's an opinion - don't be so melodramatic!

I wonder if you would have such a stance if a close family member needed an organ? Obviously there would have to be rules set like an age limit for example and certain people would be exempt as per what you said earlier. It's not flawed - it would just need thinking through before being put into practice.

Yes i would have that same view same as i agree with abortions, i dont like them but its a womens body so its her choice. Your body is your own and no one has the right to anything of it. As others have said in this thread organ donation is a gift. Its not a devine right of yours or mine if we became ill its a gift and people like you are taking that forgranted.

When you turn 16 (or some set age) you get a letter saying you are being automatically registered for organ donation, go to this website or fill out this form to opt out. No-one is so busy they can't log onto a website and click a few buttons. Before that, it's up to parents.

Severely mentally handicapped people are on some kind of disabled register aren't they? (could be wrong) Can't be that hard to exclude them and have it as an opt-in system.

What happens if the kid comes from a bad home and there in care and are bounced around from one place to another and never get that letter ? Or what if a kid gets that letter but forgets all about it because something major and life changing could happen to them that day ? What happens if they get the letter then send it of opting out and it gets lost in the post ?

If kids are in care the Government knows about it don't they? (i'm assuming). They could do it the next day, or the day after, or after that. Send a letter of confirmation to say you've been opted out. Most people have internet these days anyway.

I think you have to feel pretty strongly about it to want to opt out, and if you want to opt out you'll probably manage it.

So mentally handicapped people's organs are not as good as anyone else? Why should they be opt-in and we opt-out. What if the kid doesn't have internet? Keep it the way it is. If someone wants to donate organs let them, but unless they do, respect there decision.

You are joking arnt you social workers are overloaded as is and can't do there job properly half the time because of the workload.

I know it might sound strange but I don't want to be carved up even when I'm dead!
I don't do the religious thing at all but I still want to toast in one piece.

If you die in suspicious circumstances, you ain't got no choice mate. Autopsy it is, so whilst they're there they may as well take some useful stuff from you.

They can take what they want from me when I'm gone. Take it all and save on the cremation costs if need be.

I won't feel the cuts, I won't miss the organs, and my family won't see me. Best thing I can hope for is that when I die, someone gets the chance to live. I donate blood platelets once a month, so think that if I can do anything to help someone, I will, whether dead or alive.

Nice on scall, i've been donating platelets for about 18 months.

Social worker doesn't have to have anything to do with it. Whoever drafts the intricacies of the policy gets advised on whether 16 year olds in care should be included, if there's a significant blanket risk that they will be uncontactable and there's no way around it without burdening social workers more, then don't have them as automatically registered.
