Osama Bin Laden is dead.

why as the worlds enemy number 1 ... been thrown in the sea and not taken for autopsy?

thrown in the sea.... If i told my kid this story he would ask if it was made up..

I disagree, fundamentally with your point.

I would go so far to say that having him on trial where hard line clerics can point to him being 'abused' and 'tortured' and perhaps 'enslaved like a dog' would create more terrorists than you could ever believe.

With his demise comes small voices and less martyrdom in the face of no captive being held to 'unjust' American law.

I can see your point, but sometimes you have to bend rules a little. I would say that those 'rules' would have been amended, somewhat, by the respect shown towards Islamic religion and burial.

^ I agree with this. I have become exasperated over the last few years about some of the things that have been done in the name of anti-terrorism but I cannot conceive of any way that they could have taken him alive. I know that probably makes me a bit of a hypocrite but sometimes reality has to impose itself on your principals.

A very disappointing and defeatist post.

Put it this way, if the Government was to put a soldier in each individual's house (or a telescreen as Orwell prefers) for 24 hours a day, there would never be a crime committed in the world. Should we cave in to our libertarian principles because there are criminals at large? No, we should not.

Is he definatley dead?

By the time The news reaches British daytime news, he has already been buried at sea conforming to Islamic tradition.. Sorry but why?

Why would US forces kill him and then allow his body to be buried at sea. Because he really deserved a respectful funeral? Surely they would have taken his body to a US Base or at least held onto it for a while. Have any pictures of his body been released?

Im not trying to stir some stupid conspiracy theory i'm just curious.

(Btw I haven't read all the bin laden thread so feel free to delete if this has been covered)

You need a fucking wake up call sir! Get your dick out of Stalin's ass and take a second to actually use your brain and think this out.

Yes, anybody who is a 9/11 truther is obviously a Communist. Same with anybody who might show a support for Cuba.

(You don't actually know what Communist means, do you?)

Everyone who is a 9/11 conspiracy theorist is a moron not a communist...anyone who talks about the concious effort of a bourgious society to send the proletariat to their deaths fighting a war is, in fact, a communist.

I have to say, I'm not usually one for conspiracies, but this story doesn't sit well with me.

Who mentioned torture?

We should stick to our principles even in the darkest hour. If they find giving him a fair trial contemptible; so be it.

Now that Stalin's been mentioned, there is an analogy to an incident which occurred after the Second World War. Once the Nazi leaders and generals had all been captured, Stalin proposed that they should all be summarily executed. Churchill, in disgust, remarked that he would rather be 'taken outside and shot' than abandon the values established at the cost of countless Allied lives. That, to me, is admirable.

It is, but that situation is not entirely analogous to this one. There was no cult of personality in relation to those generals that meant that their preservation meant that further attacks on the UK were much more likely.

Uncomfortable as I am about it, I couldn't see any other outcome given the circumstances.

the heroes of ww2 were the working man of all nations that were sent into battle by people who went to the similar sort of school Dave and Gideon went to. The same in bred/over educated toffs who started the domino topple to the war by tying Germany down to crippling and humiliating surrender term upon the armistice of ww1

the country that paid the dearest of all the nations were Russia who lost 8.5 million soldiers and 17 million civilians. Whether its palatable to us or not, if it wasn't for uncle Joe who sent them to their death, we would be eating snizel for breaky............

Would this be the same Uncle Joe that signed a "non aggression pact" with Hitler in order to divide up Poland, was this the same Uncle Joe that committed unspeakable massacres in Poland, you certainly have a strange view of the world, if you care to read your history the armistice agreement was pushed by France to the objection of both the British and American Governments, whilst it may have been a small factor leading up to WW2 it was not the deciding factor.

It's true that the Americans have done many bad and stupid things in the past, but on the whole they have been a force for good in the world.

Just one more thing, there is no evidence whatsoever that the Americans backed Bin laden in the war against the soviets, he was a bit part player, the main recipient was Ahmed Shar Mhsued, who was of course assassinated by Bin Laden the day before 9/11.

In my experience most rabid Anti Americanism, mainly comes from left wingers who are bitter that the cold war was lost and their ideology was soundly defeated around the world, just remember that more people died because of Communism and it's fellow travellers, in the 20th Century, than died in the WW2, most of them were innocent civilians, I would be ashamed to have anything to do with such a murderous way of thinking

I wasn't aware that Muslim practice allowed for autopsy, ergo the '24 hours' bit of being respectful to the religion. And even so, what's to say that an autopsy did not take place immediately after Bin Laden being 'brain dead'??

Not sure what you guys are looking for...

And by the way, my 'torture' comment was using the example that twisted clerics could say ANYTHING to underpin their cause for vengeance at Bin Laden's imaginary capture.

Sorry to disappoint :-(

This is not about me compromising on my libertarian principals, this is about the realities of the military exercise as I imagine it and the likely outcome of his arrest and incarceration.

I hardly think that equates to a full blown capitulation of libertarianism.
