I don't believe we are.
Our defensive record of the past five seasons suggests we are. In order since 2010/11 season, the final table shows us as conceding 33,29,34,37,38, and worse still was that our record of regularly having the best defence over this period was last season bettered by four other clubs. Either our system is wrong, or the fact that three of our four back four squad members have now reached or passed 30, with Kolarov and Vinny also just a few months from that milestone suggests that work has to be done in this area.

Haven't really seen Otamendi play, what's his defensive style?

One of the best aspects of Denayer playing for us is that he seemed different to Koumpany, Mangala and Demi. They all play the same way, breaking out of the defensive line to make a tackle/make interceptions. Denayer seemed more calm and composed and that would complement what we have.

and also bear in mind how many times we got away with clubs missing chances against us? we got very lucky at times last season and were also grateful to hart for a lot of top saves!

That wasn't that different even under Mancini (i.e., Hart making crucial one-on-one saves), and also we scored more goals since Pellegrini came in, but I guess the fact that we have now a more attacking based style of play has nothing common with our goal conceding.

It's the overall standings and the points that matter in the end, and we were much worse this year than in 13/14. Is it because our defense got worse? Hardly as it was actually more of our attacking display that dropped down a lot compared to the season before.

We have played all out attacking football for the past two seasons. Surely folks have noticed that ?

But the team & the defence have been getting older. That's why we have Mangala & Denayer. Then we have Kompany & the veteran Demichelis, a perfectly balanced group of centre backs. At the end of next season, we would, I imagine, be looking to move on Demichelis & also be assessing the performance of the other 3, to see if one of those needed replacing. As far as fullbacks go, imo last season not one of the 4 was anything above average & all are getting older. That is an entirely different matter.

But comparing the defence now, to under Mancini is mental imo, as we used to sometimes play for a draw or a 1-0 with everyone in midfield/defence under Mancini & had people like DeJong & Barry parked in front of the defence, plus the partnership of Kompany & Lescott, which was the best until Mancini broke it up & tried to play 3 at the back etc. We also had Micah at his best at fullback. Defending now is different. We are evolving into a different kind of team. It needs more pressing from the midfield.

We still got dicked by people like Napoli under Mancini anyway, for the same reason, midfield not tracking, marking etc.

Whichever way you look at it our defence performed worse last year than in previous years. Kompany and Zabaleta were both out of form, Mangala found it difficult to adapt and Clichy and Kolarov only found form when getting extended runs. Much of this may be due to the constant chopping and changing of the defence early in the season.

Ultimately though the is the last year for MD and we have to plan ahead. The reason we are most likely going to overpay for Sterling is because of a lack of adequate forward planning. Clubs know we are desperate for HG players and so they will put higher price tags on such players. If we wait until we are desperate for a CB, clubs will charge us more for them. Better to look for a replacement for MD now, rather than wait until we desperately need one.

Kompany, Mangala, Denayer, Demichelis and Rekik.

Why on earth would we sign another expensive CB?
