So who's to blame for last seasons relatively poor defence? Our much maligned LBs? Yaya's penchant to getting forward without offering enough defensive input?
Fernando's post-Stoke form? MP(or the Master Planner's) gung-ho tactics? If you mention any of these points I guess I'd have to agree with you. The only area where I seem to differ with most posters on here is that I still won't exonerate the CBs as they have not been convincing all season. We make reference to the final 6 games last season where we were a lot better but we all know how it felt squandering two-goal leads against Swansea and Villa. The point I'm making is that our defence is not finished article yet. Add the fact that rival teams have the opportunity to improve their squads now, then you'd understand that the issue of how much we're spending should only be a secondary consideration. The only 'problem' I see with this potential transfer is what the media and rival fans would say but I'll tell you what, I couldn't care less about that. I know CB is one position that relies heavily on other units of the team and many-a-times CBs get skinned by opposition attackers because they were left exposed but we have also seen CBs bailing their teams when everyone else were not doing their jobs. An example of this, off the top of my head, is Koscielny for Arsenal. There were times when it seemed everyone else was sleeping, central midfielders, Monreal, Matersaker, etc but his presence at the back was more or less their lifeline and oh, how they missed him when he was out injured. Denayer should be eased into the starting 11 with time. Yes we all hope our captain fantastic is back to his best, others have been good but not great so this is an area we need to strenghten and my prefered way to getting this done is sending Mangala the other way, on loan so we can have him back when Demi is gone.

No way do you pay a reported £40m on a player and them send him out on loan. Mangala took time to settle and was becoming increasingly confident towards the back end of last season. I believe he will be the foundation for this season.

If anyone is going on loan, IMO it would be Denayer

I doubt denayer goes on loan, it seems he was promised a crack at the first team. He's probably 3rd choice CB right now

That's a fair proposition and I'm open to options regarding who goes out on loan but what is sacrosacnt for me is getting our first choice CD who luckily is available (next season it might not be so). If you recall last season we wanted Pepe but it didn't work out (I think that was January of 2013/14 season iirc), then in summer of 2014/15 our first choice was Roma's Benatia. It was when we realized he wasn't going to come that we opted for Mangala because of his previous two seasons perfomance which was a huge risk. I'm a firm believer that Manga will come good and surprise his critics but I made that suggestion if that's what it'll take to smoothen the deal.

This isnt true, Benatia wanted to come but the board wanted Mangala over him. Benatia nothing more than a plan B. Been poor at bayern too

Jesus. No one's going anywhere, we have our four centre backs for the season. If we do buy a big name centre half in all probability it will be demichelis who takes a back seat.
One or two injuries at the back and we will benefit from having a fifth top centre half as we don't ever want to get into a Garcia at centre half situation again do we

I really hope we sign Otamendi. Superb centre-back and he gets a good number of goals too. Mangala will come good I'm sure, but I don't want to rely on him week in week out.
