Our attack - what's off?

Played without Aguero and Jesus for most of the season. Sane left, Mahrez is shite and Torres is only 20. Midfield has gone from Silva-Dinho-KdB to Gundo/Foden-Rodri-Kdb. I wonder what's off with the attack.

The slow tempo us not just in midfield. It's everywhere. Cancelo is the only player who seems naturally in a hurry.

Part of it has to be Pep's drilling keeping possession, which forces everyone toake safe passes. But part of it is just players showing no dynamism or urgency.

It's quite annoying to watch

Aboslutely this. Its so tepid and pointless at times...running into brick walls every time it gets on the wings. I'll get roasted for this, but mahrez is just utterly pointless for 90% of the time. Worse signing since mangala for me. But he does what even sterling is doing of late...just nothingburger attack mode.

As dax pointed out, that a RB playing at LB can look the most threatening out wide is a massive issue and is really rather telling.

Sick of foden being played out wide too.

What stalls our play is that up until the Liverpool game we had no centre-forward. The final ball is delayed because there hasn't been a centre-forward.

I think City are well short of intensity in our game too but what can we do about that? I agree with those who want to see Foden play centrally. He'd be ideal as a player to link play with Jesus.

You won't get roasted mate, Mahrez is turning into a terrible signing and really needs to sort his act out. The lack of pace is so obvious, it stalls so many of our attacks.

Do you think if I took Salah and Mane out of Liverpool's side it might stall their attacks?

Jesus!

Injury to Aguero and Jesus and KDB not 100%.

No reason why City's goal-scoring wont pick up as Jesus and Aguero return.

My post might have been too narrowly focussed. It's not solely the attacking players that are the problem. Let me give you a specific example of what we are missing:

This is an attacking move from the back. One touch football, possessions based, quick distribution, fluid movement. If you mark this as 10/10 we're running at 5/10 or 6/10 at best!

We haven't seen us play like this against a top side in awhile. That has nothing to do with Aguero being injured or KDB not 100%. Sadly, it's something bigger than that.

A contrasting example was how Walker ran from his own half deep into Liverpool's backline before being tackled. I remember a lot of blues in the match day forum championed that - they saw someone driving at Liverpool's defence - yet what it showed me was the lack of movement and passing options he had.

Maybe this is down to fitness and I'm worrying unnecessarily but there's fundamentally something gone from our attacking play. I don't quite know what or why but we aren't at the level we were at two seasons ago. Maybe we set the bar so high it's unrealistic to expect us to hit that every season?

You and @Dax777 have both articulated what my post was really about. The slow, lethargic, lack of fluidity in our attacking play. It's not down to the attackers, it's the whole team. No energy, urgency, quick distribution or movement. It's like we're shackled at times.

Our front 3 don't link up like Liverpool, or like Utd used to do, we are different & more midfield oriented.

If you look at the typical front 3, it's one striker plus Sterling & Mahrez.

That means the midfield etc has to create most of the chances, as Mahrez plays for himself as first option & Sterling is shagged out & currently has the worst final ball in the known Universe. Plus we don't 'do' crosses as such.

KDB is knackered, Silva has gone, Bernardo has lost his mojo & Foden is 20. The others are plodders. The loss of Silva & Bernardo, is two of the world's best players, from two seasons ago, gone. KDB is only at 50%.

Also all of them have been doing the same things, for several years with people studying videos of them doing it. Now they do it but think about doing it, slower, first.

My short term attempted solution would be to involve more young players, not because that's perfect, but because the current plan requires a miracle to turn it round. If Aguero & Jesus suddenly start hitting hat tricks, we will appear fine. But how do we get KDB & Sterling to full sharpness even then, purely by making them run more miles ? How will they be, in January ? If they manage to do it, how will they be next season ?

We could use the whole attacking/midfield squad inc academy players to try & find another option in order to get KDB & Sterling fit & to give the senior players each more recovery time, even if it's just getting them off the pitch 10 mins sooner.

Also the opposition has not seen these people, they don't know what their game is, so it could turn games for us.

I would pick a date in the calendar, where KDB is effectively 'injured' ie he has a month off. Then look at Sterling doing the same.

Then afterwards the attack will be sharper & we also have a transfer window in there.

We can't just run them to death & expect them to be inspired by it.

I'd like to see a 3 at the back,as i think we have the players to make that system work and i also think it will make us far more direct in our build up.Who knows,we might even look like an exciting team again.
