Yes fully agree. It would have been a hard knock to take losing the Gillingham game. But we would have gone up as champions the next season most likely. But for the people who were there it probably marks an important milestone which can be viewed as a kind of rebirth without which all that has happened since may not have happened. Looked at in this way it probably was the most important game in recent history. However, viewed from outside and by a lot of new blues the events of nearly 20 years ago now are just historical footnotes. What is important is competing for the top trophies in football a third division play off long ago pales into insignificance compared to a semi-final clash with Madrid.Gillingham has taken on an almost mythical importance with blues largely because of the unbelievable drama of how we won it.
All the spurious claims that we would've sunk without a trace add fuel to the fire but had we not gone up that year we'd've gone up the next year or the next .
Biggest games in our history are for me Newcastle 68 QPR 12 and West Ham 14 - win those and we were champions, doesn't get any bigger than that. One could argue that if we get to CL final that would be the biggest game in our history as it's widely viewed as a more important competition.
