Our biggest ever game?

Globally our remaining Champions League games are the biggest we have ever been in, that's based on revenue and audience. The way some blues seem dismissive of its magnitude may account for the atmosphere in previous rounds !

Gillingham has taken on an almost mythical importance with blues largely because of the unbelievable drama of how we won it.

All the spurious claims that we would've sunk without a trace add fuel to the fire but had we not gone up that year we'd've gone up the next year or the next .

Biggest games in our history are for me Newcastle 68 QPR 12 and West Ham 14 - win those and we were champions, doesn't get any bigger than that. One could argue that if we get to CL final that would be the biggest game in our history as it's widely viewed as a more important competition.

Haven't read the whole thread so apologies if it's already been mentioned but I view the rags semi as right up there in terms of importance - a truly seminal moment
Yes fully agree. It would have been a hard knock to take losing the Gillingham game. But we would have gone up as champions the next season most likely. But for the people who were there it probably marks an important milestone which can be viewed as a kind of rebirth without which all that has happened since may not have happened. Looked at in this way it probably was the most important game in recent history. However, viewed from outside and by a lot of new blues the events of nearly 20 years ago now are just historical footnotes. What is important is competing for the top trophies in football a third division play off long ago pales into insignificance compared to a semi-final clash with Madrid.

Had we not beaten Gillingham that year would we have still been offered the Commonwealth Stadium??
If we don't have the stadium, there wouldn't have been no takeover, no Premierleagues titles or Champions League games!
So for me it's still the Gillingham game

It depends on whether you are talking about the supporters's experience or the club's status.

In my mind a champions league final raises the worldwide status and brand of the club more than a premiership title.

Who else would they have offered it to?

This

Also for those saying we would have gone up the following year...how the fuck do you know?

Plenty of clubs that faded into complete obscurity over the years who were once plying their trade in the top leagues

Gillingham will always be the game that mattered most

Of course there will be bigger games...just not as important games

Yes I think we would've still been offered it.

We averaged what 28 or 30 thousand that season so we were the only option really. What else could they have done with the ground ?
