Our Defence

Good post, I agree with a lot of it.

I'm not so sure about Yaya going though, I think he can play in a pressing team, and showed that last Tuesday for me, he doesn't have to be mobile, just be the furthest back, and the controller, the one they can always use. His days of bursting forward are probably done, and he doesn't have the energy to chase about, but his ability to be in space to receive and pass is exceptional, so why not use his strengths ? When we signed him, he was brought in as a defensive midfielder, in fact we were criticised for having too many at the time, he'd even played in the back 4 at Barca, but we never use him that way. People say play him further forward, but I disagree, I think we should play him as an anchor in front of the CB's, we'd lose some of our attacking style, but we'd gain some stability, and from there he can also organise the others. Delph and Fernandhino can then provide the legs, with others working ahead of them.

oh i don't doubt his ability in all the things you have said...he controlled the game yesterday and some of his passing (as usual) was outstanding...ive also noticed he is trying really hard to defend better.

Ny assumption that he won't be here was based on the fact that his agent will no doubt stir the pot again come the summer.

Sorry if it's a repeat but for the majority of games, especially those we dominate, we play with a back 2 and not a back 4. Any mistakes made with such a high line are likely to get punished. Very few teams play through us when we're set up correctly.

Pellers wont change so this won't either. Couple this with that most games we spend only minutes defending, it's no wonder we're not very good, we don't get enough practice...

Our entire defence is compromised by a lack of desire to do the dirty work. The tactic approach is absolutely fine if and only if all the players are prepared to do their jobs.

Example 1: The first clip on MOTD last night. 5 minutes into the game. Yaya is goal side on the half way line of his man who plays a ball out wide and Fernandinho has to go across to cover - no problem. He then plays it back inside to the man Yaya was supposed to be picking up and he's 5 yards in front of Yaya under absolutely no pressure to pick a perfect pass in between Otamendi and Mangala. It wasn't a quick one two or anything special that you could put down to good play by Swansea, it was sheer laziness.

Example 2: The second clip on MOTD, a couple of minutes later. The defence push up - no problem. Sterling fails to close down his man allowing a another easy pass in behind Clichy who is caught out of position because another midfielder hasn't done his job.

Spot on that,Ferna must be shagged out and pissed off watching Yaya stroll about

I think at the moment we have the worst organised defence of all the PL teams it is truly awful.

It got no better when Delph came on though. In the second half Swnasea scored, had a goal disallowed and Hart had to make two great saves. It the whole team failing to defend. De Bruyne is the worst culprit

Great thread this with some excellent input and im glad that some are realising that we need to defend as a team instead of just blaming the manager or individuals.

It is laziness, lack of composure & what I fear worst, no organisation. It is there match after match sloppiness, e.g. the ball is regularly in the air coming into our area under no sort of pressure, so what do we do - head it aimlessly & without looking for a blue shirt BACK to the opposition. Job done.
We have no interest in tackling other than rushing in to commit a foul, so any time we can get the ball we need to do it.
From about minute 75 yesterday the only time we had the ball was picking it out of our net. Until we got lucky.
