Outside Maine Road...6th November 1971....3-3 Derby Day Pictures

Look at the pic of the old guy selling newspapers - to his left is a guy in a blue jacket with folded arms - its Rooney with a wig on?
A few years ago there was a classic thread on here of photos from old city matches - these are perfect for that thread - it would be great if it got going again

My first Derby I was 15, brilliant game and felt like win as we equalised so late. No segregation crowd split two thirds blue one third red less mother than I expected. On the he train back to the Fylde Coast after the match a mob of reds tried to intimidate half a dozen blues including a black guy. The black chap pulled an axe from under his coat and the rags fled jumping off the train at Bolton. The rags had a reputation as being the hardest fans round which I now know was built on sheer numbers and soft targets. Seeing them shit themselves and run rounded off an excellent day.
Great pics, this remains one of my favourite City matches, great atmosphere, great football and as you say Buzzer's late equaliser felt like a win seeing the glum rags faces at the final whistle. No segregation meant it was definitely a bit "lively" inside the ground, especially as this was the only season with the completed North Stand as a covered terrace, and the addition of the roof also added to the overall atmosphere.

doh, i read your post as a Rodney as of only fools and horses ,who is to the right , :(

Great photos. Thanks for sharing. Seems like the ska/suedehead haircuts and fashions were kicking around and everyone went round with their hands in their pockets.

I suspect them two lads(pic4) are reds....they look a bit fish out of water types.
Pic 2 seems to have been taken outside turnstiles which utd fans were congregating in...not sure if there was segregation back in 71,but far too much red on show....
When did segregation at grounds come in?
When I started going regularly to Away games in late 70s/early 80s there were definitely 'away sections'.
The famous Leeds away FA Cup victory that had a pitch invasion and Leeds players scrapping (78? )you could see there was (huge amounts of blues along one side and behind one goal)
A lot of the old footage I've seen from early/mid 70s when violence seemed to be getting a lot worse opposing fans seemed to randomly 'mingle'.
At Wembley finals you either had 'The Tunnel End' or 'The other End' . For the 76 lge Cup final my dads friend got tickets very close to 'The other End' which meant we were surrounded by The Toon Army, a bit intimidating force 9 year old(brilliant view of Tueart's goal though!)

Force 9 year old? What does that mean. For a 9 year old. Bloody predictive texting!!!
