Owning a woodland

I'm not sure about your claim for ancient woodland but the figures for overall forest as a proportion of land mass in the UK should be a source of national shame at just 13%. The average for continental Europe (excluding Russia) is 38%! We seem to be unique as a country in terms of our total disregard for the beauty that surrounds us.
Only 2.5% of Britain is ancient woodland. Defined as being continuous wooded since 1600. We are home to more very old oaks than the rest of Europe and are planting around 14000 hectares a year at the mo, pity most of it is non native conifers though as this does very little to help the landscape. Ticks boxes though.

One third of Europe is now forest and almost half of that is coniferous.

And yes, there are countries with more ancient woodland by size than us, the big one on the border of Belarus and Poland for instance, but as a percentage we do have more ancient woodland.

I see, deforestation for profit!

;-)

Unashamedly so.

'Twas the way back in the day and good business. It’s not as though the property was stripped of trees, because there is plenty of woodland remaining. Just enough were taken to pay the loan and clear the debt.

However, although it was perfectly acceptable back then, I will apologize on his behalf for every tree felled to keep ‘everybody’ happy and content. :)

I wouldn't be cutting all the trees down, that would defeat the object. Many areas are neglected and overgrown and need sustainable management, by removing some trees and planting more you are doing wildlife a favour.
Besides you aren't allowed to clear full forests, I've read it's 5 cubic metres of timber every 3 months.
I'm also looking into charcoal burning which can give you the right to live on the land. Then of course you need somewhere to live..
