Owning your home.

Oh it’s no offence mate I don’t live in any of the aforementioned areas. But we all have to start somewhere and that’s not gonna be Didsbury or Chorley Cum Hardy. They are where you end up when you have worked for 10-20yrs in a good job and your salary and your partners has grown accordingly.
My first house was a choice between Gorton or Burnage. Had to stretch a bit for Burnage.

If we had the same jobs now as we did then, young professionals with degrees, we would be buying in Gorton and really pushed to do it. Definitely harder now for young people. My kids are in high school. I don't see them moving out for a long time.
 
Can only claim for 2 children now if born after 2017 and the benefit cap is 25k roughly. They aren't rich and the waiting list for council houses are ridiculous, you have people who live in council houses on their own who haven't downsized and families of 4 stuck in 2 bed flats.
Yes, the social housing situation is a scandal really. We need to build many thousands, yet govs of both persuasions have ducked this.
Developers don’t like building social housing as it is not as profitable as ‘executive’ estates or ugly boring boxes as I term them. There is a case for market interference. Some councils write a social housing quota into planning permission for new schemes but there are many get outs for the developers.
Questions of downsizing and increased earnings need to be addressed. Did I read somewhere that a well known union leader earns £186,000 p.a. yet lives in a council house?

But how many can pay off a mortgage or get a whopping lumpsum when their Grandparents/Parents pass away who have paid off their mortgages etc
 
What the fuck you on about, new 3 bed semi in a decent area £250k minimum I wouldn’t count Moss side as a decent area. If you want to start off there then at a cheaper rate that’s what people should be doing but they won’t because they see the Instagram generation and want it all now.
Fine housing on an old football pitch thereabouts, I believe. Whatever happened to that club?
 
It does depend on your definition of affordable, but looking on Rightmove there are certain a fair few terraced houses for sale in Failsworth, Gorton, Openshaw and Moston for around £120-140k.
My son bought a house on the outskirts of Bradford two years ago. Nice area. Largish detached three bedrooms, two bathrooms, three toilets, decent garden, cul de sac. It’s excellent. Price £165,000.
Bradford not popular with Yorkshire middle classes, not sure why (cough). It’s an ill wind etc.

Hope your wife will be back to her old self soon, I agree the NHS is the best it was the jewel in the crown but depending where you live it’s very hit and miss. Cancer seems to be an area that is funded properly as I found out recently if you have a lump or funny mole it’s fast tracked.
It costs thousands if you need long term care, accidents serious injuries and you need long term health care. I‘m sorry we didn’t make private health insurance a priority £67 thousand for one year a home carer to come out to the house after a serious accident.
Buying your own home is obviously important but adequate insurance is just as important.
I agree adequate insurance is important. Maybe I am misunderstanding but I didn't think health care insurance covered long term 'care' costs. Most policies have built in limits for each category. Its more for acute medical conditions such as hip replacement. Thats the type of insurance we have and more and more I am questioning its worth, particularly given our experience with cancer treatment. Sorry if I am misreading what you are saying and thanks for your best wishes - she is completing radiotherapy this week.

In terms of home ownership, for sure its a big consideration as you get older. My mum had vascular dementia and had to move into a care home which is means tested. She had prepared well in advance by making my sister joint owner of her property which meant she didn't need to sell her home until she was ready and because its value had been reduced through joint ownership had her care fees capped to the amount of her pension.
