Owning your home.

Me and the misses are still paying off and hoping to leave it to the lad when we move onto pastures new. The only worry is we get put in a home, have to sell and pay 6 grand a month for someone to wipe our arses. It really is difficult to predict the future. Both have pros and cons, I'd like to see it stay in the family but that doesn't always happen unfortunately

My son bought a house on the outskirts of Bradford two years ago. Nice area. Largish detached three bedrooms, two bathrooms, three toilets, decent garden, cul de sac. It’s excellent. Price £165,000.
Bradford not popular with Yorkshire middle classes, not sure why (cough). It’s an ill wind etc.
Lots of lovely places away from the big cities where prices are more affordable, the compromise is normally the commute (which personally I’ve always not minded as it gives you time to switch off and park the shitty day at work).

If you want good schools, nice area with good transport links near a major city then you pay through the nose for it. Personally I wouldn’t thank you for living in a City or even on the outskirts, much prefer the countryside where there’s a good rail connection to get to where I need to go.

Without trying to turn this into a political thread, the Tories are purposely running it down to turn it into a private organisation.
I recently became self employed and am currently looking for a health plan for myself. I have yet to see a quote under $700 a month for basic coverage........
This it what is coming the UK's way....
700 dollars a month for basic cover that’s America is it? that’s what I’m afraid of the NHS is a prize asset from “cradle to grave” but the writing is on the wall we have so many managers in it now earning huge salary’s there is not enough money to pay the nurses. It will become like America I think.
If I was starting again the big house would be second behind full private health cover, that’s me giving in to the writings on the wall.

Just need to save up the 12k deposit and legal fees whilst paying your current rent. Easy as fuck..
I did.......or something similar.

It sure wasn't easy, worked crap jobs, took any overtime available, worked a sideline second job, got through a divorce (fortunately amicable) and persevered to get what I have now.

I guess it depends whether you have the determination and constitution to put in the effort, or you find it easier to say "I can't do that" and expect it to be provided for you.

I was paying around $160 a month when employed with the employer contributing the rest.
Oh and if I wanted to add my wife to my company health insurance it was $600 a month for her.
And then there is dental insurance too.....

It was one of the reasons I (and 49 other area managers) were laid off and instantly offered part time work (up to 25 hours, although if we wanted to work 40 we could) on the same rate of pay - but no health coverage, no annual leave, no bank holidays and no sick pay.
I told them to fuck off.

Private health care is not an option when your retired unless you are in millionaire territory. How much you pay reflects the risk. Once you get old and you have a few issues the cost will be off the charts.

I have it through work. But never had to use it. When I retire there is no way I will be paying for it. Tories will keep running the NHS into the ground but they don't have the guts to come out and say they want ti privatise it. They are reliant on people deciding themselves they need to go private. Cunts. We need 20 years of labour government to sort it out.

Unlikely to follow US model which has as many problems as ours. Maga republicans, for e.g., threatening to defund Obama care.
More likely to follow German model of social insurance, but any change to taxpayer funded model a long way off.
Personally, I prefer the German way of doing it to ours. I think it’s much more efficient and effective.

Yes, the social housing situation is a scandal really. We need to build many thousands, yet govs of both persuasions have ducked this.
Developers don’t like building social housing as it is not as profitable as ‘executive’ estates or ugly boring boxes as I term them. There is a case for market interference. Some councils write a social housing quota into planning permission for new schemes but there are many get outs for the developers.
Questions of downsizing and increased earnings need to be addressed. Did I read somewhere that a well known union leader earns £186,000 p.a. yet lives in a council house?
But it is in Bowdon.

If you've not got decent parents it can be very difficult to balance the saving for your own property and actually living and creating memories whilst you're young.

It's not impossible but it's difficult.

It all depends on how much you want it over the best clothes, car, holidays etc.

Overtime, 2nd jobs and houseshares helped me get on the ladder and I was skint in my mid twenties and had zero help from my wank parents.

Buying is definitely better than renting though OP and if you don't have kids, the woman won't get the majority or all the house either.

37k built in England last year. Most grant funded by the Gov. It has been a priority for all Govs for a generation bar 2015 & 2016 between the Coalition and May starting, but didn't last long.
