Paedophilia within the game/City launch redress scheme

I played for him at Whitehill Juniors in 75 for one season.

Everyone knew him as “Benny” and he had a big mop of curly hair.
He used to work a stall at the underground market in Manchester selling knock off boys fashion gear.

For those who don’t know , back in those days 1st division clubs didn’t have their own junior/ academy teams , they had affiliated clubs and Whitehill was City’s.
Virtually all our youth players would have come through that production line.

We played at Park Road Stadium , Cheadle which was City’s 1st team training ground at the time and it was a great honour as a mad blue to play on that hallowed turf. We also trained on a Friday night at Victoria Baths. Bennell had just been released from a apprenticeship at Chelsea and I remember he had loads of their training gear which we all played in. He used to peep over the 3/4 height poolside changing cubicles to ”just make sure “ you were ready to train.

Fortunately for me , my old man never let me out of his sight so I was not going to be a victim of this monster.
As you can imagine, he was very charismatic, almost pied piper type of man but like all Paedo’s , he had plenty of tricks up his sleeve. I kid you not , he once brought a baby Lion into the dressing room. His props were plentiful.

I was 10 at the time and so I don’t recall seeing anything inappropriate but I do remember not feeling part of his little chosen gang of boys . At the time, I thought this was down to the fact other boy’s were better footballers than me but with hindsight I was probably not doable on his hit list.

That is a bloody scary and sickening realisation .

He was the cousin of another of the lovely Bennell family , Ronnie, who grew up on the Councillor Lane overspill estate in Cheadle , as did I.Ronnie murdered a girl in Burnage in the 70’s , served his time and then murdered another lady years later after several years of notoriety within the low life youth on our estate.
Thankfully, he hung himself in Prison.

The trail of death and devastation left behind these heinous crimes is truly awful.
I know of one local lad, who played at Crewe back in that day , who drank himself to death in his late 20’s - I may well be putting 2 and 2 together here but sadly, I suspect I’m not.

Truly Evil Bastards.

In answer to your last question first, Barry Bennell. That sounds trite but isn't meant to as it's the obvious answer.

This is our own review:-

Thanks mate, I'll have a look in this with interest, I was just wondering why it's always referred to as City and Crewe. From what you've stated seems like the devious snake was simply mooching about for as and when looking for victims.

I knew who Bennelll was ,(at a distance fortunately) by playing youth football around 1975 way before any of the historic charges were mentioned I understood he had a connection with a team called Senrab which had Chelsea FC connection s never seen any mention of this , after a City home match me and about 6 mate's were waiting for a102 bus at Princess road bus stop back to town when he was in a black transit van with 2 lads passengers we jumped in the back and were dropped in town we would have been 14 / 15 year's old putting him about 20ish so close to evil he seemed a decent lad but I suppose that was all part of his act
Yes very lucky, that said, I guess they can spot the ones who wouldn't be compliant as well as those who could be manipulated - absolute disgrace.

I genuinely don't condone violence in any form and would never do this but it makes me feel like I want to give him a bloody good hiding with bare fists, I wouldn't mind if he fought back, in fact that would be better - I stress I would not do it, it's just a feeling.

When i was 15-16 i played for a team in the late 70's early 80's that had links to crewe academy ,some of the team ended up going there , thank god i wasn't good enough to make the next jump up & not invited, not saying i know anything but sure that barry bennell was at the club then ?

For the younger posters on here who are perhaps struggling to understand how this could happen, have a read on Wiki about The Paedophile Information Exchange. They were extremely active politically and campaigned for the legal age of consent to be lowered. How they were 'accepted' is beyond comprehension.

BBC1 2100hrs tonight - Footballs darkest secrets

David White and Paul Stewart both feature,it will be a very tough watch.

I hope these lads have found some comfort from talking about the horrors they had to endure, and they have received the help they need.
They are heroes in my book,as they will most definitely have helped others who were maybe too frightened/ashamed to seek such help before these two,and the others, came forward and found the courage to speak out.
Hopefully their bravery has also prevented many other children from suffering a similar fate.

I remember I used to play against a team called Tigers and Senrab (Barnes backwards) that had links with Chelsea and I also remember the Underground stall on the market....thinking back there were always young lads hanging around it

As an outsider looking in he looked quite a 'cool dude' and I obviously didn't think at that time there was anything strange about the situation.
