Exactly. Gymnasts know exactly how much their routine is worth before they do it, so it just comes down to how many mistakes they make when they do. It seems like BMX and skateboarding are far less well defined and far less consistent.They have extremely clear scoring criteria and scores can be challenged. A Canadian girl successfully appealed her difficulty in the all around qualifying.
And I think skateboarding in particular is far more luck-based, because they're often doing tricks they can only do half the time. Gymnasts don't do something they aren't pretty sure they can nail. If they got 5 attempts and only 2 counted, you'd probably see some insane stuff on vault.
