Paris Saint-Germain (A) - CL | Post-Match Thread

Do you remember the home Derby well over a decade ago where we got absolutely battered and one 1-0 with (deflected?) Petrov strike from 40 yards?

It’s was our only shot that I can remember and we were gash. By your reckoning, we were the better team.

I will say this. We regularly see that the team that wins the CL is not necessarily the best team in Europe. Hell, they're not even the best team in their own country. Who could argue with a straight face that Chelsea were the best team in England on the two occasions that they won it?
But where we get away with creating a cartload of chances, missing most of them, putting say two or three of them away, and walking away with the three points, domestically, I think that in the CL that just doesn't work nearly as well. Pep's virtually said as much. In the CL, clinical is everything. You can be pretty mediocre in all other aspects of the game, but you get two chances, or even one, you put one of them in. You do that on a regular basis, and you've got a good chance of winning that competition, even against superior opposition.
It's one of the reasons why the CL will never count – for me personally – on any kind of level comparable to the Premier League. Every year, the best team in the land wins it. There are no mistakes, no jammy title holders: not over thirty-eight hard fought games, in a league where even a “minnow” can pull off a shock.
That said, our owners want the CL, the manager wants the CL, the players now want the CL, and I dare say plenty of supporters want the CL. So who am I to object. Let's win the thing and get it out the way.

There is no point overthinking it. One-off group game. We'll be fine, we have to be more clinical, some of our players are still finding rhythm, it's still quite early in the season. Let's not try and make a big deal out of this. The Liverpool game is a big deal, and my only gripe with the result from PSG game was lack of rotation in the backline. It's not going to go well.

Yep, his race here has been run and it's time for a fresh challenge.
Hopefully we can manage his exit without causing too much unrest between now and that point.
Really hoped he could turn it around but he sticks out like a sore thumb these days due to his weaknesses. When he was still producing week in week out it was easy to forgive his faults, sadly that's not the case anymore.
It isn't a question of lack of belief in the team's ability but more a case of there being no guarantees. I, along with 92% of this forum thought we would beat Southampton but we didn't, only 41% of the forum thought we would beat Chelsea but we did. I thought we would batter that lot in red in the derby at home where we would have won the title and we did but only in the first half, we then threw it away in the second. All I am trying to say is they are not a bankable 6 points. We were more than capable of getting a result last night but we didn't, we were hit by their ability to put away 2 of their 3 shots on target. This isn't the first time a situation like this has arisen and it can actually happen to any team. There is as they say no easy three pointers.

Of course there are no guarantees mate, I alluded to that when saying being confident doesn't mean there's no chance of a poor result. My overriding point is we shouldn't be going into those games with anything but confidence because we are the better team with the better coach with a decade of success behind us.

I've become fascinated by Pep's longstanding frustration with football as one of the few sports on the planet where the best or most technically gifted player or team on the day doesn't always win. The way he talks about tennis and basketball, in particular, gives such an insight to how he sees sport.

That's an issue, as nobody abroad can even afford/justify a knockdown fee of £50m because of his £300k a week wages.

He's coasting and I think that's because he is more than happy to run his contract down if he doesn't get the terms he's wanting.

We won't sell to a direct domestic rival, he won't join a lesser team.

We need to get creative next summer and my first stop would be Madrid and Barca. They still love to make a statement even with little money.

Worse case scenario, someone pays us a decent loan fee for the next two years and also agrees to pay his wages.

It might require that level of pragmatism.

We are paying Raheem £14.5m a year, so we are committed to £30m wages over the remaining term of his deal.

Add that to perhaps a £20m loan fee over two seasons and we would at least recoup our £50m back.
I'm really disappointed with him, definitely seems to have downed tools for City, yet is a different player when pulling on an England Jersey. Like I said earlier it's Palmer or Mcatee over him from the bench now
