Paris Saint-Germain (A) - CL SF | Post-Match Thread

This isn’t done and dusted yet. PSG are more than capable of winning 2 - 0 at our ground. Even though we played well second half last night, both our goals had some good fortune to them. I still think we need a world class striker. Anyway, let’s hope we finish the job. C‘mon City!

am in the camp of a world class striker is needed in the summer. but every time i question the false 9 pep rams it down my throat. the game last night was 1st half defo need one 2nd half well that shows me

that first have chance for foden when he it the shot right at the keeper down the middle i said haaland would have scored that ? 2nd half foden went on amazing run with the ball at his feet messi like. the shot could not get it out of his feet but that was the false 9 to a tee

the lack of options are key for me from the bench ? pep does not want to play aguero sterling jesus he's backing the false 9 in europe. he will not change his mind so even if we had haaland or a world class striker my feeling is they sit out last night

i never understood the false 9 until last night. its a big game option pep uses because of the work rate he asks from the front 3. pep rotates silva foden kdb and all have 3 or 4 jobs in the team and marhez is the out ball to bring them in ? it must be a nightmare to defencd or play against. the amount of running by them 3 is scary. silva must have a twin because nobody runs more than him in world football. i bet KDB was the first one to go up to him and say this is really your motm award

With respect, I'm still of the opinion he has a tendency to over think things in crucial CL matches. This was latently revealed when Pep recalled what Cruyff had told Barca players about treating big matches as friendlies, enjoying them & rising to the occasion. Previously we've seemed too pressured because of the; 'Pep was brought in to win the CL', 'After spending £1,000,000,000,000,000,000 on players, Pep STILL hasn't won a CL in 10 years.' Etc.... Even during a testing first half the skeleton of who we are was clearly evident, however after half time, we put flesh on our bones by compacting our play more & supporting each other, meaning no players were left isolated & outnumbered with no options to pass to.

Yes we were more conservative in the first half, but all it took was a reminder of what we do week in week out to turn our fortunes around in the second half, where previously Pep seems to have ripped up what has worked for us to spring a surprise which hasn't worked. There's a big difference between a tactical adjustment, & some of the wholesale tactical & personnel changes in crucial matches I've seen previously which have left me more than a little baffled.

I get what you are saying and it's really semantics from what my opinion is.

I think the whole world knows Pep lives and breathes football. He thinks about everything and studies every detail. I don't think there's a team out there he wouldn't be preparing for in the same way. But equally, we don't know what results could have been had we played different formations/styles so it's hard to know just how wrong he has got things. As he always says, when it comes off he's a genius and when it doesn't he's criticised. That's his job.

You look at the Liverpool game and there were definitely issues, but we should have had a pen. And Sane wrongly had a goal disallowed in the first half that could have made it 2-0. With the penalty given and scored (pushing it!) we'd have been going through. The Spurs games he didn't do anything wrong. We wanted to push for a goal in the first leg, De Bruyne was held back, but we were in an almighty battle for the league. And Llorente's goal would have been disallowed for handball this year.

He also made changes for our game in Madrid which we won, but the subsequent changes he made for Lyon were obviously criticised. The lineup was shocking and most of us felt we were out at that point. But we got back into the game and created plenty of chances to score and win it. Individual errors/misses were more to blame than Pep's formation and tactics.

But I think you are right overall. He seems more confident in the side now. He has established a real balance to our team and is trusting on the usual tactics, formation and players to get the job done in Europe. There was a definite reluctance to overcommit in the first half. Whether that was Pep or the players I'm not sure, but I'd guess it was Pep. We reverted to our usual game in the second and were top class.

i think it was one of the marhez foul he turned away marhez started laughing the city players and captain KDB had a word with the ref ? after that it was like the ref shit the bed and give up. even the marhez freekick when he scored the BT commentators said finally the ref gives us a freekick hahahah
Kev whispered in his ear, "The world is watching."

I wouldn't so readily dismiss a 4-1 away win in the Nou Camp in a CL last 16 tie.

With players like Mbappe, Neymar and di Maria they can turn a tie on its head in 5 minutes. There's justifiable confidence and there is bravado.
A bit late into this thread but:
PSG have clearly got very fine attacking players a good away record and we underestimate them at our peril.
But to put the Barca result into perspective Barca are a currently a team who are determined to get our 5th best centre back because they think he will improve their defense.
